School starts Thursday in Santa Monica Malibu.  Even without school age children, this always somehow seems like another new year, another fresh start; like the January New Year, a bit nostalgic, a bit anticipatory. Let's focus on the anticipatory.

There is still time to RSVP for the "Welcome to League" brunch this coming Sunday. This is for new, nearly new, and about-to-be-new members. If you are reading this I think we can assume you are somewhat interested in what the League is doing. This is your chance to learn more, meet some experienced members and have your questions answered. The event is in a private home and you will be given the address and directions in response to your reservation.

Our next scheduled event is the annual Fall Membership Luncheon, Saturday, September 19th at 11:00a.m.  We are fortunate to have Rick Cole, our new City Manager, as our guest speaker.  This is no charge, pot luck, a wonderful opportunity to bring a friend and introduce them to the League.  Again, we are meeting in a private home and you will receive the address and directions in response to your reservation. This is an excellent opportunity to hear Cole in an informal, small group setting.

This fall calendar will also include meetings on the two national studies.  In October we will come to consensus around how to amend the national constitution.  Background information and the consensus questions are on line here.  If you would like to be more involved in the study contact Thea Brodkin.

November will be the meeting about Money in Politics (Campaign Finance Reform).  The consensus questions are not yet published (will be available next month), but good background information is available here now.  If you would like to help with this study, if this is one of your passions, contact our president, Ann Williams

Voting Rights Action

Last week we celebrated a historic legal victory that restored voting rights to nearly 60,000 people in CA who have been disenfranchised since 2011. The outcome of the Scott v. Bowen case is a major step in our struggle to achieve suffrage for ALL Californians! More on this significant victory here.

From National Council

For most of us who were not able to attend National Council in Washington, D.C. earlier this summer, some special presentations were recorded.   Here is the presentation by Dan Tokaji, Professor of Constitutional Law at Ohio State University on "The New Soft Money" or what we usually call "independent expenditures."  If the name sounds familiar, he was a staff attorney with the ACLU of Southern California 12-15 years ago and frequently in the news.
