Next Sunday is Father's Day and we want to take this opportunity to remind you that fathers and other men have been members of the League of Women Voters for over 40 years.  Is there a man in your life you would like to gift with a membership this Father's Day?

This is your Last Call to the annual meeting this Saturday, June 20th at 10:00a.m.  This is your opportunity to take part in the business of your League as we elect new officers, adopt a budget and a consider our focus for the next year.

Following the business meeting there is a sandwich and salad buffet and a presentation by David Martin, Director of Planning and Community Development for the City of Santa Monica.  Reservations are needed, please register from our calendar page as the mail is not dependable this late.

Guests are welcome, but they will not be allowed to vote.  Metered parking is available beneath the Center.  All members are encouraged to come and help us plan for a new League Year.

Studies are the backbone of League

This is the process by which we reach the positions that allow us to advocate.  Currently at the state level we are studying public post-secondary education in California.  We will be appointing our Santa Monica study committee soon and welcome interested members.  Currently supplemental reading material is on our website starting with these three areas:
  • Economic indicators of need for additional degrees/certificates;  Reports from Little Hoover Commission and others
  • The Master Plan then and now.
  • Funding and affordability at all levels.

Contact us if you are interested in participating.

MAKE IT FAIR
The League of Women Voters of California has joined the "Make it Fair" campaign to make basic property tax reforms for more fair taxation of commercial and industrial properties.  For more information see their website.  For League member training with campaign consultant Tracy Zeiuff see calendar below.

Two Action Requests

League Supports "Lobbying and Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2015"
The League sent a letter to the U.S. Senate with other reform groups expressing support for the Lobbying and Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2015. This legislation, sponsored by Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) would limit the ability of lobbyists to use bundled contributions to buy influence with members of Congress.

Tell Your Representative to Redefine Coordination
It's time to close the loopholes in our campaign contribution system and strengthen the rules prohibiting coordination between candidates and outside spending groups. Tell your Representative  to cosponsor and support HR 425, the "Stop Super PAC -- Candidate Coordination Act" introduced by Representatives David Price and Chris Van Hollen.

It is not Monterey, doesn't pretend to be, but we have a lovely small aquarium at the pier beneath the merry-go-round.  Contact for hours, feeding times, and children's programs. Perfect for a summer afternoon.
