Tomorrow is Earth Day, Saturday is Arbor Day, but we do not need a special day, week, or month to remind us of the need to live in a sustainable way. The drought, brown lawns around us, red flag fire alerts in April: we are reminded. This Indian saying is a good thought to keep: "We don't inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children." And our grandchildren and generations to come. We are fortunate to be in Santa Monica which has long focused on being a sustainable city in every way, environmentally, socially, and economically. For more on the League focus on sustainability, this is our LWVC Action Policy for Sustainable Communities. This was first adopted in 1999 and is remarkably current today. For practical help locally, you can reach the Office of Sustainability from the city website. Which relates directly to Saturday's event... |

As we face something like 5% of the normal snow pack this year, this paper seems most relevant. The LWVUS Climate Change Task Force has developed a background paper for League members and others on the projected impacts of climate change on the cryosphere. |
