January 6, 2015

A new year has started.  Can you remember to write 2015?  For the League, this marks the half way point in a League year as each new board starts on July 1.  It was a busy first half and the second half looks to be equally as exciting.

The nominating committee is starting to look for new board members.  If you think you would like to serve contact Hannah Heineman at hannahheineman@gmail.com.  If you want to check out a board meeting first, they are always open to all members.  Call or email the League for time and location.  The new date is the 4th Monday of each month in the evening.

UPCOMING EVENTS

January 19: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration.  LWVSM will have a table in the involvement fair as usual.  Stop by and say "Hello."  This is an excellent opportunity to join the League!

The main program is at the SGI-USA World Peace Auditorium at 525 Wilshire from 9:00 to 10:30a.m.  Involvement fair immediately following across the street in the Youth Center at 606 Wilshire.  We have shared their Facebook information on our page with all of the weekend's events.  Check it out.

January 25:  State Program Planning Brunch.  You always vote every election, don't you?  This is your opportunity to vote in the League.  Let us know where you would like to see LWVC focus their time and energy for the next two years.  Flyer to follow

Background information--current positions and ways they have been recently used is available here.

February 28:  Luncheon with the Mayor.  A chance to hear from our newly elected mayor (and League member) Kevin McKeown.  Save the date--flyer with details to follow soon.

March 26:  Women Who Shape Santa Monica  Save the date!

Also planned for March is the first local meeting around the state study of "Affordability and Accessibility of Public Higher Education in California."  If you would like to be a part of the local study committee let us know.

Then in April a forum is planned on water issues both locally and state wide as they affect Santa Monica.
