Election time gets closer
Even in Santa Monica we can see the changing of the seasons. The ginkgo tree outside the window is turning gold and election day is eight weeks from today.
Before we move fully into election mode, one last reminder that our fall membership luncheon, the start of our program year, is this Saturday, September 13, at 11:30. Our guest speaker is Maria Carpenter, Director of Libraries for the city speaking about, the community room of the new Pico Library in Virginia Avenue Park at the corner of Pico and Cloverfield. A flyer with more details is here.
The event is free and open to anyone interested in joining the League. RSVPs are not necessary but lunch is pot luck so a response is appreciated to coordinate food, chairs, handouts, etc. Email league@lwvsantamonica.org
Another non-election event is Happy Hour tomorrow, September 10, in the Patio at Spitfire Grill, across the street from Santa Monica Airport at 3300 Airport Ave. Lots to talk about and the location seemed appropriate. We will meet about 5:30 but feel free to join a little late.

Be A League Helper
Labor Day is in the rearview mirror, and we're in the thick of election season - already!
As always, the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica is busy fulfilling our mission to educate voters to make informed choices at the ballot box. It take a lot of effort to get the word out, and this is an ideal time to be a League helper.
Here are some ways you can become a super-volunteer!
- Register voters: We'll be registering voters at a variety of locations in the coming weeks. Contact vs@lwvsantamonica.org if you'd like to help
- Lend a hand with mock elections at SAMOHI: Count votes and inspire students to participate in our political process. Contact samo@lwvsantamonica.org for details.
- Come to one of our candidates forums. This is a great way to learn our process and get informed yourself. Contact program@lwvsantamonica.org - this is also a good contact email if you have a question for one of our local candidates you'd like considered by the forum planners.
- Distribute League election-related publications within our community. Also, suggest groups that might want our ballot measure pros and cons presentations. Contact vs@lwvsantamonica.org
These are just a few of the ways you can be a helper during election season. We'll be letting you know throughout the year about the many ways you can become actively involved under the heading "Be A Helper" in each month's voter.
Being a volunteer is a great way to make friends, enjoy intellectual stimulation and help your community - the greatest perks of being a League member!
