JULY 1, 2014

It is only a few days before the 4th of July and the big Santa Monica fireworks are already a memory.  We wish you a joyful and safe celebration and ask that you take a few minutes during the day to remember what we are celebrating.

For many of us in League July brings another fond annual tradition, our County Summer League Day at the Pasadena Women's City Club.  This year's luncheon, July 19th, features Jessica Levinson, Law Professor at Loyola Marymount University, speaking about The Problem of Money in Politics. Ms. Levinson's work focuses on election law, campaign finances and related issues. Morning workshops cover a first look at the L.A. County Update study of Vote by Mail, Growing our Membership, and using Twitter for Action and Advocacy.  A flyer with RSVP details is linked.  This is a popular event and often sells out, so early reservations are suggested.  Contact league@lwvsantamonica.org to carpool.

Changes in the board

As of today there have been changes in the LWVC Board.  Our President, Jennifer Waggoner, has resigned but will remain a member of the working board.  Helen Hutchison, Vice President for Program and Advocacy, will move into the Presidents position.  Joanne Leavitt has been appointed to the Vice Presidents position.  Lee Lawrence has been appointed as Government Director and will help pick up part of what Helen was doing.  There should be no change in communication with Local Leagues.

VRAA to move forward in the U.S. Senate

On the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to gut the Voting Rights Act in
Shelby County, Alabama v. Holder, the Senate Judiciary Committee finally held a hearing on the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 (VRAA). This hearing in the Senate is the first step to ensuring voting rights are protected but we also need to keep the pressure on the U.S. House. Tell your Representative to move forward on voting rights.

A note of support and appreciation to Congressman Waxman's office in your own name is always appreciated.

LWV Santa Monica is putting our teams together for the fall election season.  We will have speaking requests around both state and local ballot measures.  If you would like to join our speakers bureau, to assist with candidate forums, to help distribute print information or just request a speaker for your local group, let us know!
