February 2014

THINK BEFORE YOU INK!
The political season is now underway as many initiatives are circulating to qualify for the November ballot.  The League of Women Voters of California has put together a handy tip sheet of questions to consider before you sign that stack of petitions outside the Farmer's Market.  So...ASK BEFORE YOU SIGN -- OR, THINK BEFORE YOU INK.

SAVE THE DATE!  Plans are moving forward for our Women Who Shape Santa Monica Reception and our 80th Birthday Party on March 27th.  We will be celebrating in the beautiful 10th floor penthouse of Ocean House at 2107 Ocean Avenue.

ACTION!

LWVUS News

Three important messages from our national office:

League Joins Suit Supporting Reproductive Health Care in ACA
LWVUS joined an amicus brief in a challenge to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by employers who maintain they do not have to provide reproductive health coverage based on religious beliefs of owners. LWV has long supported access to health care including reproductive health care for women.

Voting Rights Act Fix Introduced in Congress!
Representatives James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), John Conyers (D-MI), Bobby Scott (D-VA), John Lewis (D-GA), and Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) have introduced common sense legislation that would repair and restore the Voting Rights Act. This bipartisan effort to fix the damage done by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Shelby v. Holder is necessary to restore and protect the rights of voters across the country. Please urge your elected officials to support this important legislation and encourage them to act swiftly to move toward final passage.  Read the LWVUS press statement on the new bill.

Support EPA's Limits on Carbon Pollution
President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have proposed a first-ever federal carbon pollution standard for every new power plant built in America. This is a game changer for the climate - especially because power plants are our single largest source of carbon pollution. Submit a public comment to the EPA in support of the standard and your voice will be part of the official record.

One initiative currently circulation is about the death penalty.  The League has a position opposing the death penalty.  Don't be mislead, this is an initiative in support, so we ask that you not sign by mistake.
