July 2013

July is traditionally a quiet month for LWVSM, a time of transitions, a time of planning.   Here are a few dates you should be aware of as plans are beginning to come together.

Monthly board meetings resume in August and are posted on our website or you can call 310-692-1494 or email league@lwvsantamonica.org for time and location. Board meetings are always open to any member who wishes to attend.

Popovers in Pasadena
Make your reservations now, July 27 is our ever popular County League Day at the Pasadena Women"s City Club.  Lunch time speaker is Dr.Raphael Shonenshein, Executive Director of the Pat Brown Institute. Dr. Shonenshein was commissioned by LWVC with the Irvine Foundation to make an in-depth report on California's first-ever Citizens Redistricting Commission--
When the People Draw the Lines should be both informative and interesting. Morning workshops on the upcoming LWVUS Agriculture Study, on state educational policies and the updated Smart Voter. All members are welcome to attend. See the flyer here.

Don't forget, there are wonderful POPOVERS with lunch!

A more complete calendar of upcoming activities will be included with your membership renewal notice in September.  These are what we can tell you about now:

Senator Lieu is new to Santa Monica through redistricting.  this informal meeting on Sunday, August 4th at 2pm is a chance for League members to meet him and discuss issues we share in common. Location provided with RSVP. Please RSVP to Karen Carrey.  Flyer to come.

TRAILBLAZER. a biography of Jerry Brown
Chuck McFadden, author of Trailblazer, will be our guest at the Ocean Park Library Community Room on Thursday, September 19th, 7:00p.m. to share insightes he gained while researching and writing this book.  Books will be available for purchase that evening.  More to come.

The board retreat will be Sunday, July 28th.  If you did not reply to the questionnaire sent out in May, did not attend the annual meeting or respond to the form sent to those attending after that meeting and still have something you think should be the focus of our attention in the coming year, send an email to league@lwvsantamonica.com.  We want to hear from you, our members.

Plans are underway for this meeting in mid-September.  The goal of the fall membership meeting is to introduce new people to the League in a relaxed, informal setting.  This is a pot luck meeting, so there is no cost for guests so start thinking now you you should invite.  Each one ask one is the way we grow.
