GCS Announces New Holiday Incentives for Roadmap 2 Reading

GCS has reached Lincoln, Neb., a distance of 1,517 miles along the Roadmap 2 Reading!Fun facts about Lincoln: The city was previously named Lancaster, but was renamed after Abraham Lincoln's assassination, amid much local controversy. The city is also considered one of the healthiest in the U.S. and is home to the National Museum of Roller Skating. Coincidence?

To keep our students moving on their journey to reach San Francisco in January, GCS is offering special incentives to students who read 300 minutes during the winter break. Elementary and middle students who reach that goal will receive a free ticket to the UNCG-Georgia Southern men's basketball game on Feb. 1. And any student who reads 300 minutes or more will have the chance to win an iPad mini with cover or a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card!

Start the Conversation Early About the Dangers of Underage Drinking

Most young people ages 12 to 20 do not drink. However, in 2012, about 9.3 million young people in this age group, or one out of four, had used alcohol. It is important to talk with young people early and often about the dangers of underage drinking. Helping them to understand that they do not need to drink to fit in and have fun is key. It is also important to teach them ways to say no and how to cope with peer pressure. Teachers and parents can use the resources on Too Smart to Start to begin the conversation.

White House Film Festival, Call for Student Entries

The White House has announced the first-ever White House Student Film Festival: a video contest created just for K-12 students, and whose finalists will have their short films shown at the White House. The finalists' videos may also be featured on the White House website, YouTube channel, and social media pages.

The White House is looking for videos that highlight the power of technology in schools. The videos should show how students currently use technology in the classroom or how technology will be used in education in the future. To learn more about the contest rules and how to submit video entries, download the entry guide .
