It's Time To Elect Your Nominating Committee
Throughout the year, the nominating committee is tasked with identifying talented, motivated, and responsible individuals to serve as officers of your local PTA. The nominating committee should be made up of an odd number and no fewer than three members; at least two of the committee members shall be board members and at least one committee member shall be a member of the local PTA who does not serve on the board. Neither the president nor the principal shall be a member of the nominating committee. Prior to the last general membership meeting each fiscal year, the nominating committee shall prepare a slate of nominees for officers of the local PTA for the coming year, and the president shall include that slate in the notice for the last general membership meeting. The National PTA® and Amazon Kindle have teamed up to offer a new Family Reading Experience program hosted by local PTAs in cities across the United States. Read in Spanish.
The PTA Family Reading Experience, Powered by Kindle is a set of free activities-in English and Spanish-that engage the entire family. The activities focus on improving the reading skills of children between kindergarten and fifth grade.
PTAs can use resources and promotional tools to organize a series of events that will engage the entire family and focus on improving reading skills between kindergarten and fifth grade-which would reinforce a year-round commitment to family reading. The curriculum, which National PTA developed in consultation with family engagement and literacy experts, includes activities with both physical books and e-books. The program brings together all five domains of reading including: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary.

Complimentary One Year AARP Membership
For PTA Members
Grandparents play a critical role in supporting children's achievement. More than 6.5 million children nationwide live in households maintained by grandparents. That's why National PTA is proud to offer complimentary one-year AARP memberships to all PTA members. There are three options to redeem this offer: - Option 1: Any PTA member who is age 50 and over and is not a member of AARP can redeem a complimentary one-time, one-year AARP membership.
- Option 2: PTA members under the age of 50 can 'gift' a complimentary one-year AARP membership to a loved one age 50 and over.
- Option 3: PTA members who are already members of AARP can receive a complimentary second year of membership upon the paid renewal of their current AARP membership.
To take advantage of this AARP membership offer, you must be a paid 2013-2014 PTA member who has activated your member card online at www.pta.org/activate. Once activated, redeem this membership offer. This collaboration between PTA and AARP provides substantial discounts on a wide variety of everyday and essential services. It also further encourages grandparents and seniors to actively support our nation's children. Learn more about AARP at www.aarp.org. |

Success Story!
NGHS PTSA
On October 12th, the Northern Guilford High School PTSA hosted the Northern Harvest 5K. A
running club from Northern Elementary,
sprinters, walkers and members of our community enjoyed a beautiful fall morning on the NGHS campus.
After taking a one year hiatus, the 5K shows promise of becoming a great community event. Our profit exceeded expectation s, and all monies will go back to the school via programming and mini-grants!
Together, they are POSITIVELY Northern!

Every Child In Focus Campaign
| |
|
National PTA's Every Child in Focus is a campaign to strengthen Family Engagement in Schools by celebrating the achievements and reporting the disparities within diverse populations, and sharing resources and advocacy tools to help understand the needs of every child. The campaign is a school-year-long series that provides educators, families and PTAs with the information they need to deepen family engagement in schools through the PTA National Standards for Family-School Partnerships.
Every Child in Focus - Introduction
To help with this effort, National PTA will spotlight the educational issues surrounding a particular group, highlight their accomplishments and focus on ways to help foster Family-School Partnerships.
