THINK TEETH! Teach your Children Good Oral Health Habits

Tooth decay remains one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood - and, it can be prevented! Good oral health practices at home and regular dental check-ups help children to have healthy teeth.

If your child doesn't have dental insurance, he or she may qualify for free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Medicaid and CHIP cover children's dental services, such as teeth cleanings, check-ups, x-rays, fluoride, dental sealants and fillings. A family of four with income up to $47,100 or more may qualify. Healthy Kids are Better Learners

With most American students spending more than 2,000 hours at school each year, schools are the smart place to focus efforts on child health. Students who attend schools that integrate student wellness are likely to have:

  • Fewer absences
  • Higher academic achievement
  • Higher self-esteem
  • Are more likely to graduate from high school

The evidence is mounting that healthy kids are better learners.

Two recently released reports The Learning Connection: What You Need to Know to Ensure Your Kids Are Healthy and Ready to Learn and The Wellness Impact:Enhancing Academic Success Through Healthy School Environments Report show that regular access to better nutrition; starting with breakfast; and physical activity can positively impact a child's academic success.

 Key Findings Include:

1. Only 38% of all teens eat breakfast every day.
2. Students who eat breakfast have better attention and memory.
3. Only 25% of high school students are active for the recommended 60 minutes each day.
4. After just 20 minutes of physical activity, brain activity improves.

School breakfast and physical activity promote a culture of wellness, which enhances students' readiness to learn, and gives them the best opportunities to meet their potential; ultimately preparing them for the future workforce.
