Parent Mobile Checkout Labs Now Open

Through Guilford Parent Academy, parents can check out a tablet computer at 18 middle schools

Mobile checkout labs at 18 middle schools are now open for business. Parents are invited to check out a tablet computer and from the comfort of their home, help their child with school, explore academic learning resources and also type up a resume and conduct a job search.

The mobile checkout labs are featured in the 18 middle schools participating in the PACE project. The PACE project, short for Personalized Achievement, Curriculum and Environment, is part of a $35.2 million grant the district received from the U.S. Department of Education and provides tablet computers for each student in middle schools across the county. The tablets have all of the lessons and assignments for their classes, as well as research tools and secure Internet access. The project is implemented in 18 middle schools this year. In 2014-15, the project will be implemented in all middle schools in Guilford County Schools (GCS).

"At GCS, we know students perform better in school when parents are involved in their education," said Lindsay Whitley, director of Guilford Parent Academy (GPA). "We want to support parents and provide them with the tools they need to help their child be successful, so that's why these checkout labs are so important."

Thanks to the grant, GPA has also hired a parent volunteer at each PACE school to assist with parent engagement priorities and opportunities. These Grassroots Parent Coordinators are paid up to $150 per month to communicate with parents about volunteer opportunities, lead parent-outreach activities, assist the school and GPA staff with planning and publicizing parent workshops and increase parent awareness of GPA.

LaJaunya Green, the grassroots parent coordinator at Southeast Middle, is ready to get started. "This is an exciting and innovative time for students and families in Guilford County," said Green. "I am looking forward to working with GPA this year and providing parents in my community with information and resources."

Six Tips for Keeping Teens Safe on Social Media

Being online is a good way for kids to keep in touch with friends and family. Unfortunately, there are people who can use your child's personal information to steal identities, bully them or begin an inappropriate relationship. It's important for parents to be proactive about Internet safety. Help protect your kids from online predators by following these safety tips.

Make a National Park Your Classroom

The National Park Service website offers a great teacher's section with a variety of opportunities for the classroom: you can search their curriculum materials by grade and location to find cool resources and projects; you can borrow materials like dvds, binoculars, or an exploration traveling trunk; you can set up classroom field trip opportunities; and you can request a guest speaker like a park ranger, historian, or scientist to come to your school. You can also explore their photo gallery, a YouTube channel, and the professional development opportunities for educators. Check out the site for more details on how to make a park your classroom.
