Helpful Resources Available Online
If you can't make it to a Guilford Parent Academy class, don't forget about our online video resources on the GPA website that also air on GCSTV, the district's cable access channel. The research-based programs from Connect with Kids and Active Parenting cover parenting, school success, health, character education and other topics.
Additionally, parents can help their students improve reading skills, build vocabulary, practice math problems and explain complex topics by accessing Parent Academy's online learning resources. The resources from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt include content for pre-K through 12th grade. Students and parents can also explore what careers are suited best for them and connect with career coaches through Futures for Kids.
To access these free resources, join GPA at http://www.gcsnc.com/parentacademy. Parents without Internet access may call 336-279-4924 for assistance.

Advocacy Tips and Nonprofit Guidelines Webinar
Friday, Sept. 6, 2013
1 - 2 p.m.
PTA members care deeply about policies impacting children, and PTAs are uniquely positioned to share information and engage elected officials in conversations about current issues and policies. The ability and power to provide a strong unified voice for children is one of the most cherished aspects of PTA.
PTAs can and should advocate but are prohibited as 501(c)(3) organizations from engaging in political activities or endorsing political candidates.
Join Ashley Perkinson, NCPTA attorney and lobbyist, September 6 at 1 p.m. for a webinar discussion on advocacy tips and nonprofit guidelines.

Back to School: Teaching Kids How to Handle Bullying
Bullying can leave lasting emotional scars on a kid. The way teachers, parents and other adults respond to bullying affects the way kids perceive and respond to it, as well. Stopbullying.gov defines bullying behavior; identifies the warning signs of bullying and ways to prevent it; helps adults recognize kids who may be at risk; and provides information on how to respond to bullying when it happens.
