GCS Graduation Rate Reaches New High of 86.2 Percent

For the fifth consecutive year, Guilford County Schools' (GCS) graduation rate has risen to a new high. The Class of 2013 had a graduation rate of 86.2 percent, besting last year's rate of 84.5 percent and exceeding the 2013 state average of 82.5.

This year's graduation rate is the highest yet since the state began calculating graduation based on a four-year cohort in 2006. At that time, GCS' graduation rate was 74 percent, a difference of 12.2 percentage points from 2013. The four-year cohort essentially measures the number of students who entered ninth grade in 2009-10 and graduated four years later.

"Once again, the data shows our students are making great strides, thanks to their efforts and the outstanding work of our educators," said Superintendent Maurice "Mo" Green. "Our students are not only graduating at record rates, they are achieving educational excellence."

Parents Wanted for Grassroots Efforts

GCS students and parents in 18 middle schools have an exciting opportunity coming up. Schools are holding one-day boot camps so students can learn more about the tablet computers that will be used in the classrooms this year. The tablets are part of the Personalized Achievement, Curriculum and Environment (PACE) project, which is funded thanks to a $35.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Thanks to the grant, GPA will also be able to hire a parent volunteer at each PACE school to assist with parent engagement priorities and opportunities. These Grassroots Parent Coordinators will be paid up to $150 per month to communicate with parents about volunteer opportunities, lead parent-outreach activities, assist the school and GPA staff with planning and publicizing parent workshops and increase parent awareness of GPA. Interested parents should contact the Parent Academy office at 336-279-4924 or email parentacademy@gcsnc.com.

Back to School: Immunization Schedules and Helping Prepare Your Child for Vaccinations

Before school starts, it's a good idea to take your child in for a physical and eye exam. If your child wants to play sports, most schools require a doctor to sign a release form to allow your child to participate. This is also a good time to make sure your child's immunization shots are up-to-date. Find out what immunization documentation is necessary for your child's school. Each state has different immunization requirements. Be sure to keep your own copy of your child's immunization records.

Most kids do not like getting shots. Some kids are downright terrified. This article provides tips on how to prepare your kids for a trip to the doctor to get vaccinations.
