From Leigh Hebbard, GCS Director of Activities, Athletics, and Drivers Education:
As we near the beginning of the 2013-14 school year, it's time to again submit applications with documentation in order for booster clubs and other support groups to be approved in accordance with GCS policy KD (Booster Clubs and Other Support Organizations). Although there were a few bumps in the road, the first year of implementation was relatively successful.
This is an annual process and all required information must be submitted, preferably using the online application process. You may want to review the information on the GCS website at: http://schoolcenter.gcsnc.com/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=339421& You must initiate a new booster club agreement for the 2013-14 school year. Although you must submit the other documents along with the agreement, they can be the same as last year as long as the information has not changed.
Although the basic application process remains unchanged, the site has been updated. Upon receiving a request from you, I will grant you user status and the system will send an invitation granting you access. I will not have to issue any more of the strange passwords that you saw last year.
Please contact Leigh Hebbard with any questions:

North Carolina Department of Education

There is a mushroom cloud of misinformation on the Common Core State Standards, our state's Standard Course of Study. In an effort to rebut some misguided misconceptions, please see our attached document, "Common Core Demystified."
Please feel free to forward this link, early and often, to parents and other concerned citizens who are undoubtedly asking you questions about the Common Core. Also, please peruse it yourself as it has a wealth of information, some of which includes the following:
* In 2010, the NC State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards as our state's Standard Course of Study for English language arts and mathematics, K-12.
* In 2011, the General Assembly directed the State Board of Education to continue developing the Common Core State Standards.
* In the 2012-13 school year, these new content standards were implemented in all public school classrooms in North Carolina.
* The standards were adopted because they are an improvement over the prior standards.
* The new standards are aligned with current college and work expectations and benchmarked against international standards.
* Our goal is for North Carolina students to graduate prepared to be successful in today's global and competitive society and economy.
* 45 states and the Department of Defense Schools have adopted the Common Core state standards to guide teaching and learning.
* Put simply, the Common Core is a set of standards. Teachers and local educators still select textbooks and student reading assignments and still develop their own lessons to reach these standards. This careful balance between standards and local teacher decision-making continues as it has in the past.
Also, attached are two other brief documents with more information about the Common Core State Standards.
