President's Message
from
Kelly Langston

Happy March,

As we approach the end of another school year, remember to take time for yourself and make time to enjoy your family.  These moments of joy make life so great.

Your nominating committee should be hard at work looking for next year's officers.  Investing time now will strengthen your PTA and set the stage for all the great things that are to come during the next school year.   It is never too early to develop great leaders.

Please join us the morning of March 23rd for our Spring Leadership Development.  Your leadership team planned a morning filled with encouragement, motivation and PTA knowledge.  Please see the details below.  I hope that you will join us and I hope that you will consider inviting at least one parent that just might benefit from the morning.  I can't wait to see you!

I hope that you find your hard work meaningful, your hours joyful, and your passion fulfilling.

Thanks for all you do,

Kelly Langston

GCS Celebrates 23 New National Board Certified Teachers

from gcsnc.com

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recently released updated data on the number of National Board Certified teachers working in states and districts, and GCS came out at the top of the list. GCS ranks ninth in the nation for the number of National Board Certified teachers working for the district with a total of 755.

This year, 23 GCS teachers joined this esteemed group by becoming newly certified, and 35 GCS teachers renewed their certification. Visit the GCS website to see a full list of teachers who received their certification this year. North Carolina has 19,799 teachers who have received this honor, making our state home to the largest number of National Board Certified teachers in the country.

Teachers achieve certification through a rigorous performance-based assessment that typically takes from one to three years to complete and measures what accomplished teachers and counselors should know and be able to do. As a part of the process, candidates build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Here is the list of newly certified and those who also renewed their certification.

It's Never Too Late!

Hopefully, your PTA's Nominating Committee is feverishly searching for talented leadership for the 2013-14 school year, but if you're just not there yet, here are some reminders. According to all PTA's Uniform Bylaws:
  • Committee is comprised of an odd number, no fewer than three members (five is great too!)
  • At least two BOARD members and one NON-BOARD PTA member
  • Neither the president or principal may serve on this committee
  • Prior to the last general membership meeting, the nominating committee shall prepare a slate of nominees for officers
  • The president shall include that slate in the notice for the last general membership meeting
  • The general membership then votes on the slate
  • Newly elected officers begin their term as of July 1

Be sure to elect your Nominating Committee at your March board meeting if you have not done so yet!  The last general membership meeting should take place in either April, May or June.

If you have any questions about Nominating Committee procedures, please feel free to contact Katie Sayani, GCC of PTAs VP

at
 katiesayani@gmail.com.
