GCS Finalist For "Race To The Top" Grant
from gcsnc.com
|
Guilford County Schools (GCS) is one of 61 finalists across the country that will compete for a Race to the Top-District federal grant, announced by the U.S. Department of Education this week. The 61 finalists represent more than 200 school districts that were selected from 372 applications the Department of Education received.
The department will provide close to $400 million to fund personalized student learning in the classroom.
For GCS, the $30 million grant would create and stimulate student-led learning in the district's 24 middle schools. GCS' Personalized Achievement, Curriculum and Environment (PACE) Schools Project would serve all students in grades six through eight, setting the pace for 21st-century personalized learning across the district.
"The district sees grades six through eight as a critical time to challenge and support students to drive their own learning," said Dr. Terrence Young, chief information officer and leader of the PACE Schools Project. "Technology gives us a significant advantage to reach all students with excellent resources."
Student-led learning would be creative and active, with students moving away from the traditional textbook. Instead, the textbook would be replaced by educational software loaded onto individual tablet technology that students would use daily. The tablet would free students to work at their own pace, using personal learning "maps" on the tablets that show them how they're progressing toward mastering concepts. Students who need more time can have it without pressure; students ready to move to deeper exploration can choose from enrichment experiences or accelerated learning activities that interest them.
Twenty-two districts from North Carolina applied for the grant. GCS and Iredell-Statesville Schools are the only two N.C. proposals remaining in the competition.
The Department of Education reported that 892 districts submitted optional intent to apply forms.
The Department of Education is expected to select 15 to 25 winning applications from the Race to the Top district competition for four-year awards that will range
from $5 million to $40 million. Officials plan to announce the winners by the end of the year.

Local Schools Receive Mini-Grants To Fund Career and College Readiness Workshops
|
To help parents and students navigate through the college and career planning process, Guilford County Schools (GCS) announced Monday four schools that are recipients of the DanPaul Foundation College & Career Awareness mini-grants, worth $1,100 each.
The grants, offered through Guilford Parent Academy, will be used to fund a series of workshops for parents and students that focus on career and college readiness and target low-income families. Topics will include college financing, high school courses for college readiness, goal setting, time management, tools to assess children's talents/interests and how to connect students with a career mentor.
The four winning schools are Aycock Middle, Eastern Middle, Jackson Middle and Welborn Middle.
"Planning for your child's college education can be a daunting and intricate process," said Lisa Gardner-DeBerry, coordinator of Guilford Parent Academy and community partnerships. "We are grateful to the DanPaul Foundation for helping us provide programs that will help prepare children for college or the career of their choice."
The grants are funded by the DanPaul Foundation, which was established in 2002 by Libby Moore Cornett in memory of her sons Daniel and Paul. The Foundation provides resources to help train teachers and parents in early childhood development and to protect children from abuse and neglect, stimulate their personal responsibility and offer opportunities for enrichment.

DON'T FORGET A HEALTHY BREAKFAST
DURING THE BUSY HOLIDAY SEASON
|
Healthy Holidays Start with Breakfast
What is the busiest time of the year? For many it is right now, the holiday season. This is also the time we tend to overeat or spend more time eating on the run. While the holidays can be a challenge, eating a healthy breakfast is a good way to start every day. This is not the meal to cut out because you ate too much last night or because you know you will be overeating tonight. If you are diabetic, eating breakfast helps you maintain the routine that protects your blood sugar levels. Breakfast is still considered to be the most important meal of the day by most nutritionists and nutrition researchers. So for a healthy holiday season, start with a healthy breakfast, whether you are eating at home or on the go!
Taking a few minutes to prepare foods at home gives you control over the ingredients and the portion sizes. Some foods can be prepared the night before to make the morning go more smoothly. For example, hard boiled eggs, Canadian bacon, fruit smoothies and yogurt parfaits are smart choices. So is a piece of whole grain bread or ½ bagel with two tablespoons of peanut butter spread on top. Fortified breakfast cereals (low in sugar) or oatmeal, plus low fat milk, topped with fruit are healthy selections. Muffins made with healthy additions and substitutions can be made over the weekend and easily enjoyed in the morning.
If it is "grab and go" in the mornings at your house, there are many healthy choices from the grocery store you can keep on hand. Fortified breakfast cereal bars, low fat yogurts, low fat cheese sticks and an ounce of nuts, such as almonds, pistachios or a nut mix, will help get your body going. Don't forget about fresh fruit, the original "fast food." Apples and grapes are in season now and, along with bananas, are usually enjoyed by children, who are often our pickiest eaters.
Sometimes the holiday schedule means your breakfast selections are made at the drive-through window of your favorite fast food restaurant. All is not lost! You can make better choices with a little thought. Pick up a copy of the nutritional information or look it up online. Make a list of the healthier items and keep that in your car for help at the ordering point. Some examples of smarter selections include a bagel with jam; a ham
and egg muffin or sandwich (no mayonnaise) or even a "hold the margarine" biscuit,
oatmeal, pancakes or grits. A low fat milk or 100 percent juice selection helps round out the meal.
A healthy breakfast may just give you the incentive to stick to healthy choices all day, even in spite of all the treats you are offered - a great gift to yourself!
Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season.
