August 2013
Greetings!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

FIRE is proud to be celebrating 15 years of impacting work in Mongolia. As we cross this mark however, it has been a struggle to keep our mission alive. Over the years your generous donations have helped us touch thousands of lives in some of the most remote parts of the world.

Our humble beginnings began with a group of Flagstaff friends donating their time and resources to support the people of Mongolia with warm clothes. This has blossomed into an organization that is combating one of Mongolia's leading killers, hepatitis. Since then, we have evolved our mission and developed partnerships with the Mongolian Ministry of Health, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Rotary International, Oyu Tolgoi and many more.  FIRE is at the forefront of hepatitis prevention in Mongolia.

While we have accomplished great things over the last 15 years and have more to come, the impact of the recession has made it a challenge to keep our organization alive. Recent struggles to keep up with basic expenses and keep our doors open have limited our ability to invest in new projects.

One of our very special donors came to us with a 50% matching offer. In honor of our 15th year and to assist us with our immediate needs, they have offered to help us raise $15,000. If we can raise $10,000 by Friday, September 6, it will be matched for a total of $15,000.  Donate on-line today, here.

Again, we thank each of you in helping us with this very important mission that not only is helping the people of Mongolia but also helping the world in understanding how to combat this devastating disease, hepatitis.  We would not be here without your support. Thank you.

Here is to another 15 years of changing lives, person-to-person.

Warm regards,

Meredith Potts

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." ~ Benjamin Franklin

Our focus on hepatitis prevention works with each level of the community, addressing the issues from several different angles.

Pilot Training Program - Through the generous support of Oyu Tolgoi, FIRE is approaching the third stage of a pilot program in the south Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. Prevention training and education is conducted with health care workers, policy and decision makers and now the general population. FIRE is perfecting this comprehensive training model so that it can be carried across Mongolia.

Schools - This year we will begin to work with local organizations in Mongolia to build bathrooms complete with running water and showers in schools serving communities that do not have access to running water.  This sanitation and hygiene support will help to prevent the spread of water-borne and environment related diseases, such as, diarrhea and hepatitis A.

Supplies and Training Distribution - We will continue to distribute tens of thousands of sharps containers (biohazard boxes for sharp medical waste) coupled with our comprehensive training DVD for health care workers, teaching them how to use the sharps containers, proper medical waste management and health safety techniques.

Over the last 15 years...
