Happy Mother's Day!
We wanted to share some highlights from our current "Best of" installation, which includes many vintage pieces from local estates.  The items on view were made in Mexico, the southeastern United States, Africa, Asia and elsewhere.  Treat your mom and yourself to a trip to The Folk Tree to see these wonderful finds in person.

Vintage
Mexican Rug
 
This vibrantly colored rug was woven in the 1930s and has Aztec design motifs. The colors are still astonishingly vibrant after all these years, and the finely woven piece is in perfect condition.

Lanier Meaders
Face Jug

 

Lanier Meaders
(1917-1998) was a famous outsider artist from Georgia. He is credited with keeping Southern folk ceramics from all but disappearing because of his distinct style.  Meaders is best known for his face jugs, which are included in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution as well as other museums around the country  . The piece pictured here is 10 1/2" x 8" x 6."  Similar face jugs by Meaders were recently sold at Slotin Folk Art Auction for $1500.

Fantasia Dishware
from Mexico

This 122 piece set of dishware is from Folk Tree owner Rocky Behr's personal collection and is included in the book "Mexican Pottery of the 20th Century" by
Amanda Thompson.
The fantasia style was produced in Tonala and Tlaquepaque mainly in the 1930s and 1940s.  It is recognizable by the distinct forms of its animals and fauna.

Helmet Mask
Kuba, Africa

The Kuba Kingdom
(also Kuba, Bakuba
or Bushongo) is a 16th-century historical Central African state in the southeast of what is today the Democratic Republic on the Congo (formerly Zaire).  The Kuba are most famous for their monumental helmet masks, featuring exquisite geometric patterns, stunning fabrics, seeds, beads and shells.  They are also known for their raffia embroidered textiles, fiber and beaded hats, carved palm wine cups and cosmetic boxes. They have been described as a people who cannot bear to leave a surface without ornament.
