Jesus was arrested, tried and sentenced by Pontius Pilate to be scourged and crucified during the 1st century AD (according to ancient sources). Collectively referred to as the Passion, Jesus' suffering and redemptive death by crucifixion represent the central aspects of Christian theology, including the doctrines of salvation and atonement. Easter is the culmination of the Passion, celebrating Christ's resurrection. It is preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
