DEAR FRIEND OF THE FOLK TREE,

Summer's here again and with it the sounds of music from outdoor concerts throughout the area.  Pasadena is home to the Levitt Pavilion Music Festival and many Latin artists are featured.  The season culminates on Saturday, August 24 at 8 pm with Quetzal, 2013 Grammy winners for Best Latin Alternative Album.  Their music is filled with passion & emotion, merging Latin Folk & American rock elements.  FREE
The Xipe Projects

Xipe Projects
is the latest, and perhaps the culminating, development in Peter and Roberta Markman's intense scholarly interest in Latin American ritual masking, specifically, and popular culture, more generally.
Their collection of masks and popular art began in the late 1960's and now comprises more than 2000 pieces, many of which have been widely exhibited by museums, university and commercial galleries.

Folk Tree owner Rocky Behr recently visited their exhibit "CeramicTrees of Life" and shares her experience:
On June 8th I was fortunate to attend the opening of Xipe Projects "Ceramic Trees of Life" exhibit.  Retired Cal State Fullerton professor, Peter Markman, is the founder of this fabulous space.  Peter and his former student Alison Haney are a remarkable team.  The current exhibit from their collection is beautifully mounted and is an education about this unique form in Mexican folk art.  Some of the pieces are vintage; others were made especially for the exhibition...
Ortega Ceramics

Santa Cruz de las Huertas is a suburb of Tonala in the Mexican state of Jalisco.  It is a major pottery making areas in Mexico, home to the renowned Medrano family as well as the Ortegas, whose artistry spans four generations.  Painted roosters are a very common subject for the Ortegas whose pieces are brightly colored and whimsical.  Other popular themes include trees of life and animals both real and imagined.  Before the ceramics are fired, the clay is black.  The pieces are dried outside in o prevent them from exploding when fired, which is done at very low temperatures.  Before firing, each piece is rubbed with oil which gives it a glossy finish.

In the last issue, Rocky was traveling to Taxco, Mexico in 1995.  We jump a decade to 2005 and find her on her on a trip to China:

"I've now been to China five times.  My first visit was in the late seventies when the Chinese government, at last, allowed foreign tourists.  That trip was under the auspices of Orange Coast College.  It was a homogenous group of some forty people including three university presidents, assorted academics and just the curious, like me.  The trip was memorable.  The contrast between that experience and the China of today is incredible..."
