News from The Israel Project

Clashes on Wednesday between opponents and supporters of the Islamist government of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi left one dead and hundreds injured, as the country braces for what are expected to be massive June 30 protests marking the one-year anniversary of Morsi's inauguration.Morsi blamed the growing discontent and escalating violence on a conspiracy being orchestrated by "enemies of Egypt." The charge is in line with accusations made by several Cabinet ministers recently, to the effect that hostile rumors and corruption were responsible for the country's worsening economic malaise. Large showdowns between pro- and anti-government demonstrators may begin as early as Friday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government are prepared to make painful concessions in order to jumpstart Israeli-Palestinian negotiations that Secretary of State John Kerry is in the region to promote, according to Science and Technology Minister Yaakov Peri. Peri's Yesh Atid party is a top coalition member in Netanyahu's government, and Peri himself functions as a key foreign policy voice within the party. Israeli officials have long called on their Palestinian counterparts to return to the negotiating table, and as Kerry's efforts expanded in recent weeks, have become more explicit and planned further concessions.

Testimony presented this week to the House Foreign Affairs Committee marked deepening doubts about the capacity and motivation of Iranian president-elect Hassan Rouhani to act as a moderate reformer.Karim Sadjadpour, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment's Middle East Program, described Rouhani as "less a reformer than a consummate regime insider who is committed to the preservation of the Islamic Republic," noting that "his campaign did not focus on pursuing democracy, or altering the Islamic Republic's strategic principles."

Iranian state media is reporting on statements, made by Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Naqdi, rejecting compromise with the United States. The speech is likely to dampen optimism, expressed in some corners of the Western foreign policy community, that the election of Hassan Rouhani to be Iran's next president may present an opening for engagement with Tehran.

Palestinian terrorists launched rockets at Israel on Sunday, Hamas Rocket 2 marking a violation of the mostly stable ceasefire that had taken hold since Israel completed its Operation Pillar of Defense last November. The campaign saw Jerusalem substantially degrade the advanced weaponry and military leadership of the Palestinian Hamas faction. This weekend's rocket launches was widely blamed on the Iran-backed terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), and Israel subsequently targeted PIJ military assets in the Gaza Strip.

Obama to Save Presidency by Bombing Iran?
Danielpipes.org reports: I wrote an article 3 years ago, at a low moment in Obama's first term, when his ratings tanked and his party just lost Edward Kennedy's senate seat to a Republican, that usefully suggested that Obama could "salvage his tottering administration" by taking "dramatic gesture to change the public perception of him as a lightweight, bumbling ideologue, preferably in an arena where the stakes are high, where he can take charge, and where he can trump expectations." He could do well and do good, I offered, by taking out the Iranian nuclear infrastructure. Read more.

Gun Owner Targeted with 'No-Knock' Raid

Patriotupdate.com reports: A Texas citizen is asking a state pistol appeals court to decide whether police are justified in launching a no-knock raid on a home they want to search simply because they believe there is a gun inside. "Whatever the issue might be, whether it's mass surveillance, no-knock raids, or the right to freely express one's views about the government, we've moved into a new age in which the rights of the citizenry are being treated as a secondary concern by the White House, Congress, the courts and their vast holding of employees, including law enforcement officials," said John W. Whitehead, president of the Rutherford Institute, which is defending John Gerard Quinn. Read more.

Millions in Tax Refunds Sent to Thousands of Illegals at One Address
Godfatherpolitics.com reports: The IRS, whose agents will shake you down for every last penny they can find, has been sending millions of dollars in tax refunds to thousands of illegal aliens, often at the same address. The worst example found during a recently released audit was $46 million in refunds being sent in one year to 23,994 illegal workers, all at the same address in Atlanta. Read more.

Court Declares Marriage Defenders Enemies of the Human Race
Frank Walker Lindh Godfatherpolitics.com reports: Not only did the Supreme Court in a pair of decisions do all but legalize homosexual "marriage" in all 50 states, but if you defend traditional marriage, it decreed that you are a bigot who is just out to demean and humiliate homosexuals and deprive them of their rights.
