Volunteer Corner
Miechelle Juul Hwang was born and raised in Denmark.  She came to the U.S., with her husband, Jason, whose military service took them around the world and the country.

She has been using using her Master's degree in new technologies to make Markham social media "player" on social media, is also running our upcoming Art Contest, and is starting her own consulting business.

She says that gardening is relatively new to her: "When I was around 6, my grandmother had a part in a community garden. I remember going there and mostly just eating strawberries and peas:) I was never good with plants and flowers, but when I started working at the Markham I kept my first plant alive -- an orchid, which is sprouting a new stem. Very exciting!"

As for volunteering at the Markham, she likes "...that I get to use my skills for something noble. I really love the vision and mission of Markham. As a bonus I learn a lot about plants and I get to get my hands dirty planting tomatoes, something I have never done before. The best thing about volunteering at Markham is the people -- there are so many fun and kind ones here."

March 21:
Move-over-it's spring Plant Sale

That's what it feels like to me, given what awaits you at our first weekend sale of the year.
  • Iris mania -   Two local experts will be on hand to help you select from so, so many beauties -
    • Stan the Iris Man is back with 60 (!) varieties of mostly bearded irises, including his award winners and other hard to find items, such as the Algerian Iris (I. unguicularis) pictured above.
    • Marthann will have dozens of her personal collection Pacific Coast Hybrid irises.
  • White Elephant sale - We are gathering some very cool stuff, such as the 4 foot tall thermometer!  Note that we will continue to accept donations on March 10 and March 17 from 9a.m.-noon (nothing motorized, gas, or electric, please).
  • Tomatoes - Given the forecast for continued mild weather, we are selling our 38 varieties of tomatoes earlier than usual.  To assist you in choosing:
But wait, there's more...
Hubba hubba!  We acquired some Boronia 'Lipstick', a delicately fragrant evergreen shrub that hails from Australia. It grows to about 4 feet high x 3 feet wide, and loves the sun (maybe also walks on the beach and pina coladas...).  Use it as a foundation plant, or on its own as an accent.

Reminder: Art Contest

Show off your creative side: submit your photograph or painting/sketch of the part of the Markham that you love. Contest rules and instructions to register are on our website --http://markhamarboretum.org/artcontest.html

Reminder Redux
There's still room in both of our March events.
  • March 20 - Patrice Hanlon will be doing one of her wonderful guided walks in the park.  Patrice, who writes for the garden section of the Contra Costa Times, leads you through a relaxing yet fascinating tour of the hidden parts of the park.  And you get a snack, too, I think :)  Details here.
  • March 28 - Lose your Lawn, presented by the Bay Friendly Coalition, is being offered free to our members and at 1/3 of the price of other presentations on the topic.  And you know that there HAS to be an alternative to lawns, dead or alive.  Details here
