Volunteer Corner
Cassandra Killion has volunteered for several years now, and does a great job of telling you what brought her to the Markham:
"Born in Detroit, I grew up in Europe until I was 8 years old, due to my father's job. Speaking of, my father's family settled what was then the territory of Kansas - maybe that's why he loved to garden. My mother, well, bless her heart, that is where plants went to die; but, she was an incredible cook. "I started out with houseplants. I had one fern, Fred, Sr., that I acquired in 1978, as well as Fred, Jr. and Son of Kong (both in the photo below). "Work demanded so much of my time, that I really had no time, let alone the space, for an outdoor garden. "But then I saw an article in the Contra Costa times about Markham volunteer activities, and thought, 'I can learn from Master Gardeners if I volunteer! ' "So I volunteered, met great people, am continuing to learn, and I love to make things grow. As to my amateur orchid fascination, that began when I walked into Anderson's Nursery in Poway. The fragrant orchids were blooming, and I realized Heaven must smell like that."

On January 20, the Concord Garden Club presented a check for $1,400 to the Markham. This crucial gift will enable us to install irrigation in the Mediterranean section of the International Garden. The Mediterranean section is the last undeveloped part of the International Garden.
Thank you Concord Garden Club!
Guided Garden Walks
We are pleased to announce a series of walks by Patrice Hanlon, a long-time local garden educator. This series of leisurely, guided walks in the park is designed to provide an opportunity to discover the small treasures in nature that are often overlooked. Each walk meets at the gazebo and takes place from 10 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. The inaugural walk is
Thursday, February 26. The walks are free for members, but limited to 15 and registration is required -- see website for details.
Going troppo* -
*Aussie for going crazy!
Our mates in the Australian section of the International Garden are blooming like mad, so it's hard to choose what to focus on. However, since we have to choose one to talk about, we decided to feature the Western Australian Grass Tree (Xanthorrhoea preissii). We are lucky enough to have a young specimen, so that you can admire its bloom -- that's the small spike in the center of the plant. The plant grows to slowly to its full height of about 9 feet, but, the bloom: on mature specimens, it can reach 6-10 feet tall! For now, the bloom will probably "only" be 2-3 feet. Kind of crazy, hey?
Reminder:
White Elephant donations
We will be starting to accept donations for our first-ever White Elephant sale to be held in conjunction with our first weekend 2015 plant sale on March 21. We will take anything new or used and in good working order with a garden-related theme.
You can drop off your donations at the nursery between 9a.m.-noon these Tuesdays in March only: 3/3, 3/10, 3/17.
Nothing motorized, gas or electric please.
