Volunteer Corner
This issue features Parker Burr, an incredible young man who earned his Eagle Scout rank at the Markham.

Parker is a top student at Concord High and a cross country champion (see page 15 of the Concord Pioneer).  So, lucky us that he chose Markham to do his Eagle Scout project: a much-needed data mapping, digitizing and analysis of the Australian section of the International Garden.  He said that it was a challenge as almost every plant was not familiar to him. But, he learned a lot and we are grateful for his excellent work.  Please join us in congratulating him on earning his Eagle Scout rank!

We ARE having fun!

Over a dozen people came to a workshop on a gentle NorCal winter morning last weekend to build nesting boxes for the American Kestrel.  Evidence seems to indicate that the availability of nesting sites is helping this little falcon whose numbers are in trouble in NorCal. We are on the cusp of the season o' love for our feathered friends, so if you are interested, this something you can build at home (see plans here).

Back to school:

DVC Hort class starts Jan 30!!

A long-time favorite class -- HORT-167 Spring Plant Production -- was re-added to Diablo Valley College's spring schedule.  This class teaches you how to grow anything for spring -- edible or ornamental.  One of the benefits is that you can bring in your own seeds and cuttings and get to keep half of them!  Class meets on Friday afternoons, but you may be able to arrange an alternative schedule.  Register now, or email the instructor Michelle Eyestone, for more information.

Best New Year's Resolution ever:

March 21 - White Elephant sale

Clear out your shed, be charitable, and help a fellow gardener by donating those never- or barely-used garden things.  You know what I'm talking about :)

We are seeking donations of garden-related equipment, tools, supplies, dcor, books, etc. for our White Elephant sale, to be held in conjunction with our first plant sale of 2015.   Anything new or used but in good working condition.

You can drop off your donations at the nursery between 9a.m.-noon these Tuesdays in March only: 3/3, 3/10, 3/17.

Nothing motorized, gas or electric please.

Contact info@markhamarboretum.com if you have any questions or concerns.
