Winter is Coming...
And, unlike Game of Thrones,
this is a good thing.
On Sunday, October 19th, please join us for our last plant sale of 2014. Here is your chance to stock up on the native plants of California; many of which are drought tolerant and thrive in our winter rain/summer drought climate. Manzanitas, bee attracting buckwheats, silk tassel oaks, and exotic dudleyas - we have something for every garden!
Be sure to check out one of our most unprepossessing offerings . Our wavy-leafed soap plants (aka the jaw-breaking name of Chlorogalum pomeridianum) are 'on the verge of breaking dormancy'. This is fancy talk for saying they don't look like much of anything. That said, later in the year they will have gorgeous wavy green leaves - and that's just the beginning. Come early summer, soap plants put out long delicate stems with ethereal white flowers - they really should have been the plant named 'shooting stars'.

Several weeks ago, during an evening MRAS board meeting, a family of racoons tried to enter our meeting room. The mystery of their interest in our meeting was solved when we discovered that they had made a home in the enclosed shed that is adjacent to the meeting room. The family of five was evicted from the shed, using a peppermint and rosemary oil spray to discourage a longer term lease. That said, it's a reminder that the sixteen acres that comprise the Markham Arboretum and Nature Park are a refuge and home to many wild critters, from Merganser ducks to furry masked bandits.
