Thanksgiving - The Markham Counts its blessings....
This season, our thoughts naturally stray toward the many things for which we can be thankful. Here in Concord, at the Markham, we have the good fortune to enjoy a beautiful Nature Park, Arboretum and International Garden, and we feel a debt of gratitude towards all who make that possible.
Volunteers Efforts:

Chevron volunteers during the Week of Caring
|
In addition to the weekly efforts of our dedicated crew of volunteers, we are fortunate to have some annual assistance for large projects. Back in September, the Markham got a huge jump on the grounds clean up and refurbishing when three large crews of cheerful and efficient Chevron volunteers arrived to pitch in-installing plant identification signs, sheet mulching, trucking yet more mulch hither and thither, and hauling tons of debris out of the Galindo Creek stream bed.
Their awesome efforts, part of the fantastic Week of Caring program, left the International Garden and the creek looking pristine and ready for the long winter season. We also thank our good friends at EcoMulch, who supplied the large quantity of lovely, fluffy mulch now in place, suppressing weeds and giving the grounds a much more tailored look.

Picnic in White:

Picnic In White at Markham Nature Park

And, we are thankful that there was time to celebrate too! This year's unseasonably warm Fall served up a perfectly gorgeous day for the Markham Picnic in White. Members, volunteers, family and friends enjoyed a Victorian-style picnic (complete with sparkling wine and white linen tablecloths) to the accompaniment of acoustic music from "Extended Roots"; followed by a tour of the International Garden (including a few "top secret" and carefully "unmarked" rare plants). Urban Grapevines was kind enough to donate wine and the glasses with which to toast a lovely afternoon.
"Maybe we can catch crawdads with these gummy bears!"
|
Markham Nature Park and Arboretum and the International Garden located there provide wonderful places to explore and enjoy on regular days as well. If you haven't brought your kids or grandchildren by to ramble about the park, you should consider it as a fine venue for 'fishing' or for treasure hunting.
One of our Board members recently had a story from a local long term resident, who reported that, back in 1988, her son and two of his friends had gone fishing in the creek. It might have been right after Halloween, since they used gummy bears to fish for crayfish. Amazingly, the crayfish co-operated ... per her now grown up son, Nicolas (the angler on the left), "All I remember is that the crawdads would clamp on to the gummy bears and not let go! We pulled them straight out of the water and dropped them into an orange Halloween basket. (We later let them all go.)"

How does a glass bottle survive so many years in a creek?
|
Adventures and hidden treasures still surface at the park. When the Chevron crew was cleaning out the year's accumulation of debris from the stream they unearthed a vintage Clorox bottle, probably dating from the 1930s, and a skull of some animal. Surely, Nicolas and his friends would have been fascinated!
The City of Concord:
While the Markham Regional Arboretum Society provides additional funding to maintain and enhance the Markham Nature Park and Arboretum, the City of Concord Council, and City staff are to be commended for the hard work and support they supply to maintain and improve the many excellent parks in Concord - and most especially, ours!
Best wishes for an excellent Thanksgiving
to one and all . . .
