The days are getting cooler - at least in theory - and we are all revived and ready for our last two plant sales of 2013.
Please join us for our Sept 14th plant sale.
Be sure to come to our presentation on:
Growing Edibles in a Bay Area Winter
(from 9:30 to 10:30 on Sept 14th).
We are very pleased to have as a guest speaker - Marian Woodard, Co-founder of the Rodgers Ranch Teaching Garden. Ms Woodard is a Master Gardener and an adherent of John Jeavons' principles of back to basics organic farming using intensive farming techniques. Needless to say, we are very likely to start yearning for a fine winter edibles garden as a result! One of the joys of fall is contemplating the addition of broccoli, kale and cabbage to our future soups and stews. Be sure to check out our fine selection of veggies to help enliven your in your menus during the cooler months ahead. We also have some lovely non-edibles! I'd look great in a container!

Our September 14th sale provides a fine chance to add some charming and decorative plants as newcomers to your garden:
Yucca Rostrata "Saphire Skies" Shown above, it has gorgeous blue-gray foliage on a harmless, non-spiky trunk. It will grow slowly, reaching a 5-10 ft height, by 3 ft width. This lovely yucca exists happily in containers, and is great as an accent for the dry garden. The best news - they are a real bargain! - normally $15 in a 2 Gallon, they are now $10 for the Sept. sale.

Phormium 'Alison Blackman` .
|
Phormium 'Alison Blackman` There are some plants, living outdoors, that probably inspire interior designers to create whole interior color schemes. It's hard to beat the color combination of olive green, gold and cream, and it looks pretty good on a phormium that will grow to be about 4 feet tall. It too does really well in containers, and adds dramatic architectural and color interest in the garden. Normally $20 in a two gallon, these are being priced at $15 for the sale.
Emu Bushes (Eremophila) Even though you probably don't have any emus to feed - and yes, emus do eat the fruits - these tough, pretty, sun and heat loving plants, with fuschia like flowers, are available in multiple colors and species. They are great for attracting humming birds, hardy to the mid 20`s, and very drought tolerant. All that, and they are on sale too! ( 1 gallon, usually $8, $5 for this sale)
The hordes are coming! In a good way....
If you are in the park during the week of Sept. 16, you will be seeing a whole lot of activity. We are most grateful to have the help of five hard working crews of volunteers from the Chevron Corporation, installing plant identification signs, clearing out the creek, and sheet mulching the International Garden.
We hope that you'll enjoy seeing the bustle of activity at the park throughout the week!
