I'm happy to report that we completed
a number of great projects last year.
Our handsome new greenhouse is finished-and is currently home to more than 900 tomato seedlings and other vegetable starts. This fleet of eager young plants is racing skyward, hoping you'll pick one or two-or ten-to bring home with you at our Spring Plant Sale on April 6.
This year, we have a few worthwhile projects to complete. We're planning
the installation of a sophisticated new irrigation system for the International Garden. Current controllers and valves were state-of-the-art twenty years ago, but no longer function as efficiently as
we would like. The Markham Regional Arboretum Society is very proud to partner with the City of Concord to fund these new irrigation stations in support
of the City's efforts to be water-wise in maintaining the park.
Additionally, we will be installing some interpretive signage, outlining key botanical areas in the garden as well
as information about the history of the Markham Nature Park and Arboretum. The signs are thanks to a grant from
the Stanley Smith Horticultural Fund.

Veggie Garden in a Box |
There will also be some entertaining
and educational workshops in 2013.
Have you seen the 'Gardens in a Box' that were installed at the Nursery last year? This clever solution to gardening
in small spaces were created by Troy McGregor. Troy has agreed to teach a workshop about how to put these garden boxes together. We are planning it now-to take place in the next few months. Sign up for more information about it by sending an email to us at info@markhamarboretum.org. We will make sure you get all the details.
I hope to see you at the Markham Nature Park and Arboretum or the Markham Nursery very soon!

Seriously . . . Is this thing
a credit card register????

The tiniest card reader ever... |
No, not the iPad . . . It's the itsy bitsy
white square sitting on top of the iPad.
These 1" by 1" square devices plug into
a variety of smart phones and/or iPads, and allow cards to be swiped for payment. We will be testing these tiny credt/debit card readers at our April 6th plant sale. While we strongly suggest that you bring cash and/or checks with you, with a bit of luck, we may be able to take payments from your 'plastic'.
A number of our shoppers at the first spring sale asked whether the sale
on April 6th was 'just about edibles'.
No, indeed; we will have our usual assortment of intriguing and unusual plants for sale. Additionally, we are starting to gear up for our May 4th and 5th Native Plants sale. Any of the natives that are ready in time will be out and ready for adoption at the April 6th sale. Stay tuned, by the way, in our next newsletter, for more details on the edibles, since it will include quite a few plants in addition to the tomatoes...
