Our "Warm Up"
First Sale of the Season
on March 16th

Please join us on Saturday March 11th
(9 am-1pm) for the Markham's first plant sale of the year. Winter has been slowly sauntering out the door, and our nursery plants, like those in your own gardens, are shaking off the frost and turning their leafy thoughts in the direction of spring and summer. We have a nice selection of several native Californian plants in particular, that are looking for good homes. Foothill penstemons, salvias, and monkeyflowers will reward you with a fine appearance and the sturdy toughness of plants that have evolved to thrive here in Contra Costa.

Profile of a Plant Shopper...

Five years ago, I learned about the Markham Regional Arboretum Society through attending its wonderful plant sales. I had just moved up to the Bay Area, bought a home, and started completely revamping my landscape. Project # 1 was removing my front lawn with its attendant aged juniper hedge, and replacing them with drought tolerant California natives. It's a fairly scary prospect to move into a neighborhood and immediately take out your entire front yard . . . replacing one of the prettiest front lawns in the area with a sea of brown dirt/clay. "What if the neighbors come over with pitchforks? What if my whole front yard dies?" Being new to the area, and to the available plants, I thought, "It could go that way."

It was a big relief to find a great selection of plants at the Markham, and it was surely also a help that they had very reasonable prices. One of the benefits of shopping an arboretum or botanical garden's sales is that you can find terrific plants that are just not easily available in the general nursery trade. It may be sheer coincidence, but the plants I've bought at the Markham and comparable sources have generally adapted more successfully to my garden as well.

A Few of the Benefits of Belonging...

There are a whole lot of good reasons to become a member of the Markham Regional Arboretum Society, in support of the Nature Park and Arboretum.

In addition to supporting one of Concord's most charming parks, you will have news of upcoming events, and a 20% Member's discount at our fabulous plant sales. If you are interested in visiting other botanical gardens, MRAS members have reciprocity with a number of fine organizations as well.
