My Leafy Little Valentine
We've all had that lasting love affair... with a plant that just summarizes the beauty of this world. Arti's nominee for 'best ever' is one of the world's most stately, productive and beautiful trees. What's yours?
"It was inevitable that I, who come from a heavily forested part of the U.S., would fall in love with California's oaks. Specifically, I went head over heels for the valley oak (Quercus lobata). Actually, it was the tree's "fruits" -- acorns -- that first astonished me. The line of these noble trees near the Pleasant Hill BART, awed me with the piles of gargantuan nuts so generously and freely provided. I wanted to save every last acorn, so I started researching how to grow oaks. One thing led to another, and many years later I am a California native plants enthusiast and total gardening nerd. I owe it all to these remarkable trees, whose qualities include drought and fire tolerance, habitat and food for a plethora of wildlife, and of course shade and beauty for people. If you want to learn more, check out the California Oaks Foundation (http://www.californiaoaks.org/index.html). This organization has published what is arguably the best layperson's book on our state's oaks, "Oaks of California". They also fight the good fight in helping educate and advocate for preserving the tree and its habitat. These are not only pleasing objectives, but necessary in this time when trees are on the forefront of helping to correct the worst effects of climate change. Arti Kirch, Markham Board Member

A taste of summer--
 | Tlacalula Pink Tomato |
Nothing spells 'summer" quite so well as the lure of sun-warmed, fragrant and beautiful tomatoes. Okay, we live in California, so our winters aren't quite so bad; but still, we go through months of yearning for those lovely fruits of summer. The Tlacalula Pink is an rare beauty with a sweet, pink flesh and pink skin with gold-splotched shoulders. Yes, it sounds, accurately, as if it comes from the sun-drenched heart of Mexico, but it has also been selected as a very good match for our hot East Bay summers. It's only one of a number of carefully selected heirloom varieties that will be available on April 6th.
