Greetings!

July is an "in-between-month" for me: back home now from Africa, catching up at the office while preparing for our 3rd Annual Scholars' Leadership Training in Haiti next month, and taking a week off after the 4th of July for my annual silent prayer retreat, to emerge refreshed for the challenges ahead.

Take a long look at this picture of several MBB Scholars in Haiti. Aren't they beautiful? Don't they deserve to stay in school, to realize their own dignity and develop their innate gifts? They are so grateful for your generosity, making their scholarships possible...

 Did You Know?

When a girl in a developing country receives seven or more years of education, she marries four years later and has 2.2 fewer children.

(UN Population Fund, 1990)

The leading cause of death worldwide for girls aged 15-19 is pregnancy. Keeping girls in school delays early marriage and first birth.  Education keeps girls alive!

An educated girl will invest 90 percent of her future income in her family, compared to just 35 percent for a boy. Multiply those numbers by 50 million adolescent girls in poverty, and you get the most powerful force for positive change on the planet.

The Brand New [YOUR NAME HERE] MBB Lodge in Gros Morne

For 2 years MBB has operated a boarding lodge for our Scholars who have no safe place to live while attending high school in town. The need was so great this past year that we had more girls than bunk beds. Several slept on the floor! So this summer we are readying a 2nd lodge which will open in September; it will house our computer learning lab as well as a dozen or more new Scholars. We accept a new cohort of 6th grade graduates each Fall.

Taking our cue from the stadium-naming craze in the States, we are offering NAMING RIGHTS to both MBB Scholars' Lodges in Haiti. Your one-time $5,000 gift will put your name-- or the name of someone you want to honor-- in dazzling lights on a Lodge in Gros Morne. Well, not exactly dazzling lights, but it will be carved on a handsome wooden plaque. Your gift furnishes the Lodge with bunk beds, cooking pots, kitchenware, dining table, desks, chairs, curtains, etc. What a legacy!

If you are financially able, please consider it for the sake of these promising young women. Make your donation to MBB online or via check, and be sure to tell us whose NAME you want on the Lodge!

Deadline: October 1st 2014. Hurry, while this offer lasts!

Give the gift of safe housing!

Don't miss this chance of a lifetime!

Did you say CHIKUNGUNYA?

Yes, our staff in Haiti recently said, "We've got CHIKUNGUNYA!" And no, that's not some World Cup rallying cry; it's a miserable, mosquito-borne, tropical virus. Who knew? Also known as "bone-crushing disease" (does that give you a hint as to how painful it is?), chikungunya inflicts severe flu-like misery complete with muscle aches, joint swelling and fever. It was unknown in the Caribbean until last year, when it arrived with a fury; as of last month, thanks to mosquitoes who apparently hitch rides on international flights, it has spread to the southern U.S. as well. It's not contagious, but all of our staff members and many of our Scholars in Gros Morne came down with it during June. Unlike its cousin, dengue fever, chikungunya is rarely fatal; those who contract it, however, might wish to die. There is no cure and the only treatment is analgesics like aspirin. Alas for the Scholars, they fell ill during the time of final exams... Thankfully, everyone seems to have fully recovered in time for summer break.

MBB Ambassadors of the Month

Our MBB Ambassadors this month are teens in Australia! Hats off to Briony Kent and all the members of the Social Justice Team at Mercy Regional College in Camperdown, Victoria, who dreamed up and pulled off the most amazing Fashion Show at their secondary school on May 27th to benefit Mercy Beyond Borders. FASHION RELIEF, an evening of fabulous local food and attire, raised well over $1000 despite charging a mere $15 per ticket. The whole town must have come! We are dazzled and grateful beyond words! Our fashion hats are off to Briony (seen here flanked by fellow students Caitlin and William) and all their generous, hardworking, wonderful friends!

Those of you with super-sharp memories may recall that other students from the same school hosted a "crazy tie" and BBQ fundraiser that qualified them to be our Ambassadors of the Month last November. Such school spirit! We love this partnership and your youthful ingenuity!!
