Greetings From Vi:
Welcome back to Carin' for Cairns, CRUSA friends! I hope summer was a time of renewal and relaxation for you, and of course, for your Cairns. Our newsletter took a short hiatus during the late summer months, but we are back and ready to share some great news and stories with you. We kick off the issue with an article about our September CRUSA Stars - Karry and Sean Creagh of Chicago - volunteers who "continually step up to every challenge." Read about this incredible couple who work tirelessly to bring our Cairns to new homes and new lives.
And you will love our "Happy Ending for Two." A few months ago, Charley Browne came to CRUSA with little hope for a happy life after losing both homes he had once known. And Betty Paige also arrived at foster mom BJ Isaacs' home, looking for a new beginning. Now they are both bringing daily smiles and joy to a couple in South Carolina, all because CRUSA believes that Cairns like Charley and Betty deserve another chance.
You will also read about young Nicholas in Tennessee who is looking for his forever home. He was rescued while running across a four lane bridge, and then found to be heartworm positive. He was treated in CRUSA and is now fully recovered from the heartworm, but needs to stay on a special diet to control crystals previously found in his urine. Nicholas hopes that YOU can be the person or family to give him the second chance that he deserves.
Next, we give you an exciting preview of some of the auction items you can bid on when you join our Fall 2015 CRUSA Benefit Auction. Help our Cairns, get some of your Christmas shopping done, and have a great time! And, the amazing story of Rocky and Scooter follows. These two nine and ten year old Cairns were given up by a recently retired couple who did not have a place for them in their lives anymore. Now the boys are safe and loved in an amazing forever home, AND they are on their way to fame as part of a live television production of The Wiz later this year!
We continue our theme of recognizing our foster homes and new adoptions, and hope that you can also consider fostering or adopting one of our deserving Cairns. Next month we will recognize our volunteers who transport, check references or volunteer in other ways. If you know of someone who should be recognized for what they do, please send us an email HERE.
We often ask why so many Cairn owners give up these loving and faithful companions to shelters or rescue organizations, or put them up for sale. While some owner surrenders can be heartless or cruel, there are often circumstances beyond the control of the surrendering owner.
As we celebrate the happiness that Cairns like Charley and Betty are bringing to their new family, and the great new lives that Rocky and Scooter are now enjoying, we can also show support for those surrendering Cairn owners who have chosen a rescue organization such as CRUSA to give the dog another chance for a great life. And we can also educate others who are considering a Cairn on the characteristics of the breed and the type of environment which is most likely to provide the best and safest home for this wonderful but sometimes challenging breed.
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with each of you - the volunteers and friends of Cairn Rescue USA - who continue the work of rescuing Cairns and making their lives better. Thank you for your love and dedication.
Sincerely,
Violetta Argueta

CRUSA Stars: Karry and Sean Creagh
In any rescue organization, there are those volunteers who are considered "simply indispensable".... who continually step up to every challenge....who say
|
Sean & Karry with Gilligan
|
"yes" to every request. Karry and Sean Creagh of Chicago are two such volunteers.
The couple's relationship with CRUSA began in December of 2009 when they adopted a little Cairn mix named Lucy. Six months later their family of 3 would grow by one when they adopted Cairn Kip. And in the years that have followed, Karry and Sean have been involved in numerous rescue efforts, making it possible for countless Cairns to get a new lease on life.
The Creaghs live on Chicago's northwest side and being situated just minutes from O'Hare airport has proven to be an enormous help to Midwest Adoptions Director Shell Lewis.
Said Lewis, "We sometimes fly needy Cairns into Chicago from other cities and at other times we fly dogs "in cabin" to their adoptive homes. Karry works from home and has literally turned her schedule upside down to pick up dogs at O'Hare and move them along to the next stop on their journey. The word 'no' simply isn't in her vocabulary."
Shaggy from Illinois....P.J.from Louisiana....Lilly from Salt Lake City....Tinkerbelle from Florida....Rocky and Scooter from California. These are just some of the Cairns who have found their way home thanks to the Creagh's generosity.
Karry and Sean's home also provides safe refuge to Cairns in need of temporary housing while a permanent foster home is found. This past spring on a rainy Sunday morning, the couple ventured into one of Chicago's toughest neighborhoods to pick up a little Cairn named Gilligan who had been found wandering along a busy expressway. Gilligan was supposed to spend a week in quarantine at an animal hospital but at the 11th hour, the facility closed its doors because of an outbreak of canine flu. And because Gilligan had exhibited signs of an upper respiratory infection, no other clinic would take him in. Karry was not deterred. She set up a special area for Gilligan in her home office and carefully kept him separated from her own pack until it was safe to move him on.
What inspires this dedicated couple to volunteer? Says Karry,
"We volunteer because it gives us immense joy. The first time Shell called us was because she knew we lived near O'Hare. A dog was flying in and needed a place to hang out for 8 hours and then a lift to the next stage of its journey. It was a big rush to get this dog to its new home for Christmas. I happily said yes, thought it would be a fun experience, and it was. After I had met the next volunteer and handed off the dog, I thought of all the people, strangers, who were all working together to just get this one little dog a home for the holidays. I felt such gratitude to have been a part of it. From there it grew to being more and more involved. It's a really amazing organization with such phenomenal people and animals. I have had some fantastic adventures, and every time I have such a feeling of satisfaction, a feeling that I have in a very small way contributed to making the world a better place."

REMEMBERING MOLLY: 2/17/01 - 9/10/15
On September 10th, Shell Lewis, Midwest Director of Adoptions, her husband Jim, and their Cairn Skippy said their final goodbyes to Molly -
the sweet, gentle, trusting girl who was their beloved companion for ten years.
Shell and Jim call themselves CRUSA "foster flunkies" - they had every intention of being a great foster home for Molly when she came into their lives, but they could not bear to let her go. And in the years that followed she returned their love a thousand times over.
Our deepest condolences to the Lewis family. Molly will be in our CRUSA hearts forever. Rest in peace, sweet girl.

HAPPY ENDING FOR TWO: Charley Browne and Betty Paige Go Home
When David Sifford and Kathryn Strohl of Clover, South Carolina lost their Cairn Dixie Belle, the world seemed to stop for them. She came to David and Kathryn after surviving a terrible sailboat accident in which her original owner was killed. She swam four miles to shore and then walked along the beach for some time looking for help. David and Kathryn took Dixie into their home with loving arms, and she repaid them a thousand times over with her love and devotion. Kathryn grew up with Cairns in her family, so the couple knew they would be also be a Cairn family forever.
Although they were both grieving, they did not wait long to start looking for another Cairn. They were drawn to Charley Browne, a ten year old wheaten Cairn - first surrendered to CRUSA by a woman whose job kept her away from home for long hours, and then adopted from CRUSA by another owner, but returned because
of his marking issues. He was the most beautiful Cairn David and Kathryn had ever seen, but they suspect that he had been abused sometime in the past, possibly by children, since even now he is very fearful of children, and becomes terribly agitated if someone raises a hand, even in conversation.
Kathryn and David were undaunted by his fearfulness and his marking issues, and they adopted him in May of this year. A belly band helped him get through the first few weeks in their home along with much love, patience and forgiveness. But soon they realized he needed some canine companionship. And foster mom Brenda Jo Isaacs, mind reader that she is, called David to say, "Hey darlin' - I have another Cairn that will be perfect for Charley - her name is Betty Paige!" Betty was a four year old Brindle - petite, happy and loving - surrendered to CRUSA because her owner had to move back in with her parents and could not have a dog in their home.
Barely off the phone, David jumped in his SUV and drove to Kentucky in no time.

Sweet Betty waiting for David to arrive
|
Betty Paige jumped in the car with David and never looked back. She immediately settled in once they returned home, and she became David's girl, while Charley had seriously attached himself to Kathryn. Matches made in heaven...almost. At present, Betty is very easy going and wants to play all the time, but Charley is more reserved about accepting her. He wants to own the household, but he is not quite sure about that yet. But every day, his attitude improves. He did have to take out his pretty red belly band again for a few days, but now, things are almost perfect. As David says, " we wouldn't trade either one for anything in the world."
So what's it like at the Sifford-Strohl home with two Cairns and two active retirees? Kathryn tells us, "David carries little Betty everywhere with him," while Charley is Kathryn's "Velcro dog" and cannot wait until she arrives home, at which time he runs in circles and brings her every squeaky toy that he owns, laying them carefully at her feet. David says, "They are so much fun to have around, but you have to pay attention to them! They rule the roost around here!!"
Kathryn says that she is "sandwiched between the two Cairns in bed at night," and that they stay together almost all the time, often guarding the house by watching the outside world side by side from the back of the couch. Charley is so much more relaxed than when he first joined their family - he knows he does not need to compete to get what he wants. Kathryn sums it up, "We just LOVE them - each one is unique, and we love the way they look at life, the way they are so happy!!"
Thank you to Kathryn and David for opening their hearts and their home to these two Cairns who needed their love and companionship. It couldn't be more perfect for each human and Cairn in the family!
(Click HERE for an album of Charley and Betty - and you will see why David and Kathryn love them so much.)

ADOPT ME: Nicholas in Tennessee
Picked up by animal control in Arkansas while running loose on a four lane bridge, three-year-old Nicholas was underweight and heartworm positive. Since the local animal control didn't have the resources to rehabilitate a dog with his medical needs, they contacted Molli Corbin, with Arkansas Information Resources (A.I.R.). A.I.R. is an organization against animal cruelty, with certified animal cruelty investigators. Molli specializes in commercial kennels and hoarding situations.
Of the 100 dogs A.I.R. moved from local shelters to reputable rescues in 2014, Nicholas was just one. Molli fostered Nicholas for CRUSA for a time, and he gained enough weight to begin heartworm treatment under her care.
"He was quick to house train and had great dog skills," Molli said. "He was a cute sweet little guy. I think he would make a great addition to almost any kind of family."
Nicholas continued on his journey with CRUSA and joined CRUSA volunteer Marty Taylor's home as a foster in Memphis, Tennessee. Unfortunately, Marty's vet discovered that he needed another round of heartworm treatment, but happily, he made a full recovery and was deemed healthy enough to be neutered. He was also treated for a urinary tract infection and crystals in his urine, and is now on a special food to prevent recurrences. Potential adopting families should be aware that he will need to be on this diet for the rest of his life
"Through all that he has suffered he is one of the happiest little guys I've ever seen," said Marty. "He's always bouncing and wagging his tail and lets all others know that he is the one who belongs in my lap."
Nicholas gets along well with the other dogs in Marty's house, as well as the neighbor children and Marty's grandchildren. He does tend to exhibit aggressive behavior when meeting some dogs for the first time, but once he sees that they accept him and are not a threat, he is fine with them! Marty shares this about Nick: "My daughter has a border collie, Oreo, that he loves, and it is hilarious to watch them play tug of war. Oreo is gentle with him, while Nick growls and tussles with her, giving i t his best shot." Watch a video of Oreo and Nicholas HERE! He is also a good traveler who adapts to new environments well and he loves walks more than anything. Nick, along with Marty's other two dogs, share Marty's bed at night. "He's a favorite with my family and the kids in the neighborhood," Marty says.
If you've adopted from CRUSA previously and you'd like to adopt Nick, just send an email to Adoptions@CairnRescueUSA.com. And if you're a first timer, you can apply by filling out an online application HERE. Nick is ready to go home with just the right family, and he knows you are out there. Instead of running for his life on the bridge, he is running right for you!
We are most grateful to Molli and Marty for giving Nicholas his second chance at life and a forever home.

IN THE NEWS: CRUSA Rescues Rocky and Scooter Rise to Fame!
On Thursday August 27, the last episode of the Discovery Family Channel's
reality show, From Wags to Riches, "Adoption Day" featured CRUSA's Shell Lewis, foster mom Pat Frost and CRUSA rescues Rocky and Scooter. The Cairns are owner surrenders who did not have a place in their family's home anymore when the couple retired and decided to travel. But this episode shows how they are adopted by Bill and Dorothy Berloni, and become part of their incredible family. One of the boys will be in a live television performance of "The Wiz" this coming December, and the other will be his understudy. (Since it's a live broadcast they had to have a back-up.) We will give you more details on the broadcast as soon the information is available!Bill Berloni is known as Broadway's top animal trainer and has worked with Shell before to adopt CRUSA Cairns that often become stars, while living on a 90 acre Connecticut farm with Bill and Dorothy, daughter Jenna and the other 41 animals that the family has adopted. It is incredible that nine and ten year old Cairns who no longer fit into their owners' lives are now treasured members of the Berloni family and on their way to stardom on live TV!
If you missed the episode, you can purchase the full length YouTube video of "Adoption Day" from Discovery Family Channel for only $1.99 (SD) and $2.99 (HD) by clicking HERE.
