Visit by International Road Federation chief

IRF chief Mike Dreznes will be the lunchtime speaker at Boylan's crash demonstration day

THE
executive vice-president of the International Road Federation, Mike Dreznes, will visit Australia in March for a number of key meetings.

Mr Dreznes is recognised as one of the world's leading experts on roadside safety and travels the world promoting the concept of "forgiving highways". Based in Chicago, he has conducted road safety seminars in more than 50 countries.

The visit - sponsored by Boylan Group and Roads Australia - will enable Mr Dreznes to meet with government and industry leaders in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as making the keynote address to the Australian Road Engineering and Maintenance Conference on March 13.

He will also be the lunchtime speaker at a live crash demonstration of the BarrierGuard road safety barrier at Melbourne's Sandown Raceway on March 15.

The demonstration will involve a car impacting the barrier at 80km/h after crossing one lane of traffic at an angle of 15 degrees.

Barrierguard - the highest-rating road safety barrier in Australia - has been designed to absorb an impact and will redirect the vehicle back on to the road with minimal damage to the car or the barrier. Attendees will be invited to inspect both the car and the barrier following the impact.

Industry professionals interested in attending the lunch and live crash demonstration are invited to email patriciaf@boylan.net.au for further details.

Peace of mind ... the organisers of the Geelong Revival safeguarded spectators with BarrierGuard, Australia's highest-rating road barrier.

Race officials at the recent Geelong Revival could rest easy knowing that drivers and spectators were safeguarded by Australia's highest-rating road safety barrier - the steel BarrierGuard.

BarrierGuard is the only temporary steel barrier in the world to meet the requirements of the standard NCHRP 350 (Test Level 4) and EN 1317-2 (Containment Levels N2 and H2).

Boylan Group managing director Peter Boylan - a motor sport competitor of many years standing - said the motor racing community had made enormous leaps in terms of driver safety in recent years.

"However, spectator safety is just as important and a barrier like the BarrierGuard is the best available to do the job," he said.

Peter said the January 13 accident in Gippsland, where five spectators - four of them children - were injured when a ute crashed out of control during a mud racing event, was an avoidable incident.

"Luckily, in this case, a tragedy was averted but next time someone could lose their life and that would be terrible," he said.

M4 crash - truck smashes through concrete barrier
Lucky escape ... carnage as trucks smash through concrete barrier

Phew! That was a close call ...

Dramatic video footage has emerged of a horrific accident (Boylan News, October 2012) which saw a concrete dividing barrier scattered in to the path of high-speed oncoming traffic.

The accident, which involved two semi-trailer trucks and three cars, occurred late last year on the M4 motorway in Sydney.

Witnesses said they were amazed no-one was killed when two west-bound trucks collided with the concrete barrier divide, scattering it on to the path of oncoming traffic.

Watching the video, it's clear to see that Lady Luck was on the side of drivers that day.

Footnote: Australia's highest-rating road barrier, the steel BarrierGuard,

will contain a 7.5 tonne truck impacting at 45deg, at 70km/h.

                       Potty about potholes

Creative approach ... artist Steve Wheen uses his art to highlight London's pothole plague.

An artist in London is highlighting the city's pothole plague by turning them into mini gardens.

Steve Wheen has spent the last four years searching out potholes on London's streets and pavements, which he fills with miniature garden displays.

The "guerrilla gardener" told the BBC he wants to bring "moments of happiness" to anyone who stumbles across one of his creations.

A woman had a narrow escape after she rode through a red light into the path of a truck in Ningbo City, east China, last year. Amazingly, she walked away completely unharmed, although the same couldn't be said for her bike!

Move against street sign overload

Sign of the times ... British authorities are declaring war on visual clutter.

Thousands of traffic signs are being brought down across the United Kingdom as part of a Government drive to rid streets of clutter.

Highways Magazine reports that the UK's Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin is urging local authorities to continue the cull.

In London alone, 8000 repeater signs (signs that remind drivers of an already-stated restriction or requirement) and 4000 poles, installed on the capital's roads in the early 1990s, have been ripped out. Laid out side by side, these would stretch almost 4.2km.

"There are too many unnecessary signs blotting the landscapes of our towns and cities," Mr McLoughlin said.

Rising star ... Matthew Brabham has signed with Andretti Autosport.

Boylan Team Safety Ambassador Matthew Brabham has signed with Andretti Autosport for the 2013 season of the US-based Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.

The son of former IMSA and IndyCar star Geoff Brabham and grandson of F1 World Champion Jack Brabham, 18-year-old Matthew won the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda at his first attempt in 2012. He was subsequently invited to test with the Andretti Pro Mazda squad at Indianapolis.

Matthew was also named to the prestigious Team USA Scholarship team at the end of the year, and ably represented the squad in British Formula Renault in November, finishing second at the season finale.

"I am so excited to be driving for the Andretti Autosport team ... it was fantastic to drive for the team at the Indy test, and get a feel for how they operate," Matthew said.

"They are really professional and seem like a great bunch of guys to work with. The Pro Mazda had more power than the USF2000 car, so it was lots of fun to drive and gave me a good understanding of what to expect next season," he said.

Dad Geoff couldn't be prouder.

"I think it is really cool to have the Andretti and Brabham names come together ... both his grandfather Sir Jack and Mario are Formula 1 World Champions and Mario, Michael and I drove against each other for many years in Indy cars," Geoff said.

"Now Matthew has a chance to forge his own career and having the history and heritage of both families behind him can only be positive," Geoff said.

Matthew will also get the chance to race with an Andretti - fellow team member and third-generation driver, Marco Andretti.
