It is spring, the prelude to summer and a time when all the pesky little annoyances, legged, winged and just plain creepy, start reappearing.  If you enjoy being experimental and do not enjoy being around chemicals, then read on as we lead on with Young Living Essentials Oils for home and garden.

Good news - YL now offers some of the most commonly used oils and oil blends in sample packets that contain 10 of the 0.25 ml oils for much less than a bottle.  These are easy to carry in your tote or first aid kit, keep in an office desk drawer or pack for a camping trip.  It's the way to go if you are just trying something the first time before investing in a whole bottle.  Currently, the selections in sample packets are Lemon, Peppermint, Lavender, Thieves, Peace & Calming and Purification, or an assortment packet of 5 of these. Member pricing is $10/packet of 10; Preferred Customers pay $13.16.

First some do's and don'ts.  When mixing a spray recipe, use only a glass spray bottle and sterile water.  Always recap your EO bottle tightly to avoid losing your oils to evaporation.  Do not refrigerate, but do keep in a cool, dry location.

Insect Repellant  -Try these single oils:  Citronella, Purification, Eucalyptus globulus, Peppermint and Idaho Tansy.  How To: Put 10 drops each of Citronella, Purification, Eucalyptus globulus, and Peppermint in 8 ounce spray bottle with water.  Alternate formula:  Put 2 drops Pine, 2 drops Eucalyptus globulus, and 5 -10 drops Citronella in a spray bottle of water. Shake vigorously and spray over area.   

Ticks - Single Oils: Cinnamon, Peppermint. How To: Apply cinnamon or peppermint on cotton swab and swab on tick then wait for it to release the head before removing from skin.

Mosquitoes - Single Oils: Frankincense.

Dust Mites - Single Oils: Eucalyptus, Fir, Spruce, Juniper, Lavender, Cedarwood, Wintergreen, Rosewood. How To: Add 25 drops Eucalyptus to each load of linen, or approximately 1 tablespoon to a bottle of liquid laundry detergent. You may also add several drops of Fir, Spruce, Juniper, Lavender, Cedarwood, Wintergreen or Rosewood essential oils to the rinse cycle.

Insecticide (Fleas, Ants, Spiders, Ticks) - Single Oils: Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Lemongrass, Cypress, Eucalyptus globulus, Cinnamon, Thyme, Basil, Wintergreen, Citronella.  Oil Blends: Purification, Thieves. How To: Mix 1 tablespoon of Lemon or Orange oil in a quart of water. Using a sprayer bottle, mist the corners and areas where spiders hang out inside and out. They do not like citrus and will go away.

Moths (linen, wool) - Single Oils: Citronella, Lavender, Lemongrass, Western Red Cedar, Rosemary. How To: Make a sachet by placing several drops of essential oil on a cotton ball. Wrap and tie this in a small handkerchief or square of cotton.  Hang this cloth in storage areas or add it to your chest of linens. Refresh as often as necessary.

Mildew - Oil Blends: Purification neutralizes.Fungus - Single Oils: Frankincense. Toxic Mold & Yeast - Single Oils: Thyme, Oregano, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Clove, Rosemary, Melaleuca (Tea Tree) How  To: Various ways to incorporate.  Diffuse the oil in a fine mist out into the air.  Used indoors, a high-quality diffuser can effectively spread the beneficial effects throughout your home.   Oils can be added to household cleaners, which help to apply oils to areas that are prime areas for mold growth.
