Greetings,
Whatever your beliefs, we wish all of you a joyous celebration of Passover, Easter, and Spring.
During her visit, Dana Stabenow and I hit the Desert Botanical Garden very few days to record the way the Garden comes to life with the season. There are so many colors, like this gorgeous blue. Dana took many photos like this one and the one below. We both love the sun dial in the Herb Garden and especially the tiny blooming cactus highlight. To end our marvelous March we welcome Jackie Winspear's book launch for the 10th Maisie Dobbs tomorrow night, William Kent Krueger and the book of his heart Tuesday March 26th (another publication day party), the Hardboiled Crime Club Wednesday, and Ian McEwan at ASU on Thursday the 28th. And then we're taking a break all the way to our Cupcake Cozy with Jenn McKinlay on April 6 and our Poisoned Pen Press Gala on Sunday April 7. Don't forget we do our very own programming from The Poisoned Pen. View past and upcoming livestreamed events by clicking here. Not everyone can attend our events so these webcasts provide yet another passport to you readers. The latest Livestreams to post are for Randy and CJ, but don't miss authors you should get to know like Sarah J. Henry and Keith McCafferty. Mr. McCafferty's Spenser-like PI is also a fisherman in his corner of Montana, just outside Yellowstone, and ties flies. He kindly tied one for me. It's a Gray Ghost, a beauty! And such a fly is a clue in The Gray Ghost Murders (Viking $27). See it Here Buy It Here. Keep US Here. Thank you for your continued support Barbara and The Poisoned Pen Staff |

Thank you for supporting The Poisoned Pen, named Best Specialty Bookstore 2011 and 2012 by the New Times, 2012 by the Arizona Republic, and Poisoned Pen Press, winner of the 2010 Ellery Queen Award from the Mystery Writers of America and named the 2011 Best Local Publisher by the Arizona Republic.

MONDAY MARCH 25 7:00 PM Launch Party
Jacqueline Winspear signs Leaving Everything Most Loved (Harper $27)
Join the party for the 10th Maisie Dobbs! Our neighbor, Butter Me Bakery, is whipping up cookies! And we will have some giveaways. Come in any kind of 1930s dress if you have something you like to wear.
Maisie has come a long way since as a girl she began to learn by reading in the library of her aristocratic employers. A terrible war, personal tragedy, a mentor and a legacy, a hard-won career as a private enquiry agent, a romance with the son of the great house, the role of Maisie's loving, shrewd father Frank, are all part of the fabric of the life Winspear have woven for and around Maisie.
And now you get not only a new case but a broad look at this tapestry. And it all begins with the shooting of a handsome Indian woman dressed in striking silks who is found fallen into a London canal....
Note: Jackie is recovering from knee surgery. She has had to cancel her event in Sun City West Monday afternoon.
You can watch her on Livestream by clicking here.

TUESDAY MARCH 26 7:00 PM Launch Party
William Kent Krueger signs Ordinary Grace (Atria $25)

New Bremen, Minnesota. The summer of 1961 was a time of hope for so many, with the election of a new, young president, and The Twins' debut season. But when tragedy befalls his family, 13-year-old Frank Drum finds himself facing an adult world of secrets and betrayal, and growing up faster than he'd expected. ORDINARY GRACE is a story of the murder of a beautiful young woman, but above all, it's a story about discovering the terrible power of wisdom and the awful grace of God.
Part coming-of-age story, part mystery, ORDINARY GRACE will resonate with readers of Peace Like A River and Songs for the Missing as well as fans of William Kent Krueger's New York Times best-selling Cork O'Connor mystery series. Kent returns in late August to sign a new Cork.
Date Change: WEDNESDAY MARCH 27 7:00 PM

Books Just Arrived!
|
Charleston tea shop owner Theodosia Browning, always a bridesmaid, never a bride. This time for her friend Delaine Dish. But bad omens descend. First, a massive storm is gathering over the city. Next, Delaine's sister is late for the ceremony. And finally, the groom stands Delaine up at the altar-it's not cold feet, it's rigor mortis. Someone has iced him-and what a lot of suspects there are. 14th in the Tea Shop Mystery Series.
Coben, Harlan. Six Years Signed (Dutton $28).
Six years haven't come close to extinguishing Jake Sanders' feelings for Natalie, the love of his life who dumped him so unceremoniously for Todd. Then Jake comes across Todd's obituary and can't keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd's wife he's hoping for. But wait-the widow isn't Natalie. Suddenly, everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life-a time he has never gotten over-is turned completely inside out. As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can't be found, or don't remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake's search for the woman who broke his heart, who lied to him, soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on a carefully constructed fiction. Coben spins a high-octane domestic tale rife with ill-fated romances, buried pasts and hairpin plot turns, much in the style of his breakout hit, Tell No One.
Fremantle, Elizabeth. The Queen's Gambit Signed (Macmillan$35).
Our April History/MysteryClub Pick. Widowed for the second time at 31, Katherine Parr is obliged to return to court but, suspicious of the aging Henry VIII, and those who surround him, she does so with reluctance. Nevertheless when she finds herself caught up in a passionate affair with the dashing and seductive Thomas Seymour, she believes she might finally be able to marry for love. But her presence at court has attracted the attentions of another, unluckily for her. With her charismatic lover dispatched to the continent, Katherine becomes Henry's sixth wife. Passionate about religious reform, and ever aware of the fates of his previous queens, she must draw upon all her instincts and intellect to navigate the treachery of the court. With the Catholic faction once more in the ascendency, reformers burned for heresy and those around the dying king vying for position in the new regime, her survival seems unlikely-and yet she has still not quite given up on love...Rich in atmosphere and period detail. If you loved Wolf Hall, The Other Boleyn Girl or the BBC drama series The Tudors, or if you've puzzled over the relationship between Elizabeth and Thomas Seymour, who comes across here as a real cad, this is for you.
Harris, CS. What Darkness Brings Signed (NAL $27).
It's September, 1812. The death of notorious London diamond merchant Eisler draws Viscount Sebastian St. Cyr and his new wife Hero, the pregnant daughter of his mortal enemy Jarvis, into a sordid world of greed, desperation, and murder, not to mention treason. It's those damned French. The husband of Sebastian's former lover Kat Boleyn is accused of Eisler's murder. One-time privateer Yates will surely hang if Sebastian doesn't unmask what really happened. Although Eisler's clients included the Prince Regent and the Emperor Napoleon, he was a despicable man with many enemies and a number of dangerous, well-kept secrets-including a passion for arcane texts and black magic. Central to the case is a magnificent blue diamond, believed to have once formed part of the French crown jewels, which disappeared on the night of Eisler's death and which banker Thomas Hope has an interest.... Note: it's a real diamond, on display today at the Smithsonian. To read of its history is fascinating in this 8th investigation to challenge St. Cyr. To read of how veterans of England's wars were treated is a reminder of the care due our own soldiers.
Hunter, Stephen. The Third Bullet (SimonSchuster $27). Not new, but we finally got a last batch of signed copies in from Hunter. 4 left!
Masello, Robert. The Romanov Cross Signed (Random $27).
Publishers Weekly awards a Starred Review to our March Thriller Club Pick. "In this fascinating, funny, and frightening supernatural thriller, Masello skillfully weaves together the story of the deaths of the Russian royal family with the possibility of a new worldwide influenza pandemic. St. Peter's, a small island off the coast of Alaska's Seward Peninsula, was once the home of a tiny community of followers of Rasputin, the notorious Russian monk. St. Peter's sole living inhabitant, if living is the right word, is a Romanov-the recipient of a blessing from Rasputin, or maybe it was a curse. The island's graveyard contains victims of the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. Global warming is now heaving the coffins to the surface and into the sea. Field epidemiologist Maj. Frank Slater and his team journey to St. Peter's to see if any of the original flu virus is still a danger to humanity. The inhabitants of the nearby town of Port Orlov play key roles in the action-in particular the fetching mayor, Nika Tincook, and the local ne'er-do-wells, Harley Vane and his wheelchair-bound brother, Charlie, whose petty criminal deeds threaten the world. Toss in a pack of slavering wolves, the undead, and a chilling ending, and the result is a terrific, can't-put-it-down read. Fine prose and plotting help solidify Masello's position at the top of this crowded subgenre."
Masterman, Becky. Rage Against the Dying (St Martins $25 SIGNED April 20). Order now before we run out of first prints
A new First Mystery Club Pick."Retired FBI agent Brigid Quinn is trying to live like a normal person, with a husband, dogs, and quaint domesticity, until one day a man claims to be a serial killer whom Quinn chased but could never catch. Just as the case seems to be finally closing, Quinn finds herself thrown back into the investigation and the apparent target of another murderer. Fast-paced, thrilling, and gritty, this is a tour de force of crime fiction that introduces us to a unique and intriguing female character." This unusual debut, set in Tucson by a Tucson author, was reviewed today in the NY Times
