Greetings,
Here's some news
Katherine Applegate has won the 2013 Newbery Medal for The One and Only Ivan (Harper); Jon Klassen has won the 2013 Randolph Caldecott Medal forThis Is Not My Hat (Candlewick); and Nick Lake has won the 2013 Michael L. Printz Award for In Darkness (Bloomsbury). The awards were announced Monday morning at the American Library Association's midwinter conference in Seattle. NEXT: Jonathan Karp at Simon & Schuster has acquired David Shields and Shane Salerno's The Private War of J.D. Salinger. The biography, which is set for September 2013, has been in the works for eight years and has been discussed in Newsweek and Time. S&S said the book features interviews with over 150 people who knew Salinger (or at least worked with him), and it will be published along with a documentary directed by Salerno that PBS will air on its series, American Masters. Salerno, a screenwriter (who has a credit on the recent Oliver Stone film Savages), began interviewing people who knew Salinger in 2004. Working with Shields, who has written 14 books, the pair began turning the interviews into what S&S called "an oral biography." But the book and film are not just about Salinger, as Ferrari-Adler explained. The documentary and book "are an investigation into the cost of art and the cost of war... Through the prism of Salinger's life and his experience at war, the authors are presenting a personal history of the twentieth century." AND Dana Stabenow's Kate Shugak series has (finally) debuted in the UK. Here is an excerpt from an interview with the BBC. Click here (on Jessica Chastain's image) to listen): http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0147l6f
PLUS to commemorate the new and 20th Kate Shugak novel, grab a Bad Blood mug and Tsunami coffee beans ($24.95), Chopper Jim's favorite, to enjoy while you read Bad Blood

JA Jance
Tuesday February 5
7:00 PM
|
(Touchstone $26).
NOTE: Jance (and our staff member John) will be appearing at several West Valley locations February 6-8. Click here for the schedule in case this is more convenient for you to attend
Police academy-trained former reporter Ali Reynolds is contacted to investigate the grisly murder of a gold-digging divorcee on behalf of a woman accused of the crime. Lynn Martinson is dating the dead woman's ex-husband, and she and her boyfriend Chip Ralston have been charged. Ali is simultaneously drawn to the case of A.J. Sanders, a frightened teen with secrets of his own. He's the first to find the body in the Camp Verde desert when he goes to retrieve a mysterious buried box hidden by his absent father-a box that turns out to be filled with hundreds of thousands of dollars in poker chips.
When the body of an ex-con is discovered near the first crime scene, Ali struggles to determine if A.J. and Lynn's cases are related, while her friends in the police department grow increasingly irritated by her involvement with the cases...
A brisk family-centered drama fits the Sedona and Phoenix landscapes Jance so well paints.

Coffee and Crime discusses Rosamund Lupton's Sister ($14)
1:00 PM Phryne Fisher TV Episode 1
Come and watch the first episode in Season One of Miss Phryne Fisher based on the knockout novels by Kerry Greenwood. Set in 1920s Melbourne, and taken from Phryne's debut in Cocaine Blues ($15).
Almost as soon as the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher disembarks at Melbourne, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery. Between investigating a cocaine smuggling ring, a back alley abortionist, and the poisoning of a friend's husband, Phryne's life is one adventure after another. But of course she finds time for a romantic encounter with a dashing Russian dancer It deserves its hot raves! Truly fabulous clothes and cars, too.
Stay on for Lisa Gardner, a modern analog for Phryne.
2:00 PM Lisa Gardner signs Touch and Go (Dutton $27)
Bestseller Gardner's women are not unlike Miss Fisher, if modern and residing in New England.
Libby Denbe can tell you what fear tastes like. Former cop Tessa Leoni, now working private security, is tough, smart, mouthy-and misses the beat. She arrives at the crime scene in the Denbes' home and finds scuff marks on the floor and Taser confetti in the foyer. The Denbes, father, mother, daughter, appear to have been abducted, leaving only a pile of their most personal possessions behind. No witnesses, no ransom demands, no motive. DD Warren is a cop, and this mess is mostly hers. It's some ride as she works to clean it up-and to surprise places. Gardner is the queen of suburban suspense, the distaff side of Harlan Coben and Linwood Barclay.

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10 Mystery Tea 2:00 PM
Fred Ramsay signs Holy Smoke A Jerusalem Mystery (Poisoned Pen $25; also in trade paper $15)
From yourwestvalley.com, a nice writeup for Dr. Ramsay, author, minister, and talented guy who lives in Surprise: To read, click here
Holy Smoke is 3rd in the Jerusalem Mysteries after Judas The Gospel of Betrayal and The Eighth Veil ($15 each). All three novels have received Starred Reviews and open your eyes to history you may know only through the New Testament.
In the novel, the year is 29 C.E. and Jerusalem chafes under the Roman Empire's continued presence and oppressive rule. But in spite of that unpleasant fact of life, life goes on - just not for everyone. People die, some because it is their time, others by misadventure. But one death in particular brings the city's daily routine to a halt. A badly scorched body is found behind the veil of The Holy of Holies - the Temple's inner sanctum, the most sacred space on earth for the Jews. No one except the High Priest may enter this place, and he only once a year on the Day of Atonement. This is no casual violation, and the authorities are in an uproar.
Gamaliel, the Rabban of the Sanhedrin, the ranking rabbi in all of Judea, finds himself drawn into solving this delicate mystery while dark agents with unholy interests plot to seize control of much of the trade in certain highly profitable imports from the east and west.
Loukas, the physician, plays "Watson" to Gamaliel's "Sherlock" as the tangled web of intrigue and murder is slowly unraveled, but not before more bodies, both literal and figurative pop up. All the while Yeshua, the radical rabbi from Galilee, continues to annoy the High Priest and holy smoke from the sacrifices rises from the Temple.
Ramsay was born in Baltimore, Md., graduated from Washington and Lee University, and received his doctorate from the University of Illinois. After a stint in the Army, he joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty. In 1971, he was ordained an Episcopal priest. "Holy Smoke" is the third release in Ramsay's Jerusalem mystery series, following "Judas: The Gospel of Betrayal" and "The Eighth Veil." Ramsay lives in Surprise with his wife, Susan.
