Monthly Newsletter
February 2016
 Greetings!

February is Heart Month and a month that focuses on love.  This is a good time to focus on the heart - in terms of physical health, emotional health and relationship health. Remember that love goes a long way. Whether or not you are in a romantic partnership or committed relationship, tell those people in your life that you love them. You may want to buy them or yourself some flowers. Whatever you to communicate your love to your loved ones, it will nurture their heart and their soul and yours!

Happy Valentine's Day, and Heart Month.

Positively Speaking
Enjoying the Winter Months

The cold weather is upon us and this becomes an emotional challenge, particularly for those of us who thrive on outdoor warm weather activities.
The emotional challenge of staying indoors can develop into a real problem which is called  Seasonal Affective Disorder, commonly known as winter depression. According to the National Mental Health Association, (www.nmha.org)  "SAD is a mood disorder associated with depression episodes and related to seasonal variations of light.  January and February are the most difficult months for those affected by SAD and younger persons and women are at higher risk.  Symptoms include excessive eating and sleeping and weight gain."
In addition to the NMHA's recommendations of phototherapy or bright light therapy, I have some of my own creative ideas:
  • Bundle up and walk on the beach - if it is not too cold
  • Drink hot cocoa, tea, cider or a hot toddy
  • Light up your fireplace and sit by it
  • Write notes to friends and tell them you are thinking about them
  • Clean a drawer, shelf or closet
  • Sort through your things and pack up what you are not using to give to friends, a consignment shop, a shelter, etc.
  • Go to the gym if you can get out
  • Spend time on the internet looking up something that really interests you
  • Have a conversation with an old friend
  • Dance to music in the house or watch an exercise video and follow along
Sometimes when it is so cold or there has been a snowstorm and I can't get out, I will go outside and clean off my car several times as the snow falls. I enjoy the fresh energy of the outdoors and the snow is pretty to watch.
Everything has a season. See the beauty in winter and enjoy.
