Positively Speaking
patriciasittingThe Year in Review and Moving Forward

Here we are at the end of the year. Because of the whirlwind of activity in December, we don't usually think about what we have achieved and completed this year.

Before you sit down to think about New Year's resolutions, let's talk about why most New Year's resolutions fail.  I believe it is because we focus on the specific task instead of the value it brings us. When you choose the "form" or actual thing, you often miss the context or situation around it which may not be desirable to you.  Instead of choosing the specific client X, company Y,  new contacts by a certain date, I suggest looking at the "essence" or concept. What is the non-tangible of these goals ? Is it peace, financial prosperity, comfort, security, ease, safety, positive relationships, structure? It could be all of those. Next, look at client X, company Y and the desired new contacts and determine if those specifics will bring you the essence qualities listed.  If you want peace of mind, good relationships and ease and  Client X  brings you  more money along with more demands and unrealistic expectations, you are not satisfying your values of peace of mind, good relationships and ease.

Second, look at what you already have and are doing that works and want to keep. And most importantly, be grateful. Gratitude really works and making lists or keeping a gratitude journal reinforces your thoughts.  Listen carefully to the messages all around you. Give your work your full attention. Give thanks for all the special people who have helped your business to grow directly and indirectly. This includes friends and family who unconditionally support  you. You may want to write them an appreciation letter. That is a wonderful gift in and of itself.

Third, Go through those business files with old records and events and notes that you do not need, and shred them. If this sounds like a monumental task, take one shelf at a time and as you go through each thing, ask "Do I need this? Do I want this. You know those answers. Removing and releasing the clutter can do wonders for your energy level, motivation and brain.

As 2014 ends and we enter 2015,  look forward. You can not change  the past, but you can change what you do in the future. There is a wonderful "bowl burning" ceremony where you make a list of what you want to release from the past year. You  place your list in the flames and watch it burn. (If you don't want the flames, you can do this  symbolically as well through a visualization) Next, make a list of what you want in to accomplish in 2015 and put your list in a file for December of 2015. Next year in December, review your list saved in your file, and see where you are.

Onward to 2015! Here's to a good, happy, healthy, productive and successful year. Happy New Year Everyone!

Sincerely,

Patricia
