October 2014

October is a beautiful month filled with colors, cooler weather, apples and pumpkins. I really like this quote by George Cooper.  Enjoy the height of the fall season.

"October's Party
October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band."

Positively Speaking
patriciasittingMaking Life Changes Work For You

Why is change so hard for many of us? Because it's about the unknown. We are moving into uncharted territory and we most of us like to know where we are going. In my book Pathfinding I comment on Spencer Johnson's bestselling book Who Moved My Cheese? as I did in last month's newsletter.  "He writes about the styles of four mice who have to adapt to the cheese being moved. The message is that those of us who perceive that change is coming and prepare for it, adapt most quickly to change. Those who become angry or deny that change has arrived and do nothing, do not adapt well to change and pay the consequences. Those who eventually adapt to the change have to work through their denial and procrastination in order to see that there is something better."

When change is upon us, it also gives us the opportunity to reassess our mission in life. Richard Bolles,  author of Job Hunting on the Internet, How To find Your Mission in Life, andWhat Color Is Your Parachute? (the most popular career planning and job hunting book in the world) discussed on my radio program how your mission in life changes. In my book Pathfinding I write, "Bolles said, 'I don't think people should try to say, 'My mission in life is and always will be this.' Rather, we need to say, This is my mission at this moment... I use a metaphor of being in a foggy valley and some stranger comes along and says 'Take my hand and I'll guide you if you take one step at a time.' I think that's a much more realistic picture about mission, than thinking that you can define it for life. For example, I started out as a chemical engineer at MIT, and I switched to be a physicist at Harvard. Then I went into the ministry and now I'm an author. So at various times in my life, I've seen my mission in different ways. Use what you know of your current mission as the compass to guide you in everything you do. Find out what your mission is this year, or this decade in your life, knowing that this may change.' "

Change can also be exciting. Gail Blanke, guest on my program and author of Between Trapezes: Flying into a New Life with the Greatest of Ease writes, "It's about giving yourself permission to let go. To embrace uncertainty, to relish the struggle, and to let go of the need to know. It's about allowing yourself to float in that heart-opening, mind-expanding space and improvise. It's about discovering the thrill and joy of reinventing yourself, reinventing your life. This is not a dead time or even a down time. This is the moment you've been waiting for your entire life."   If that concept is too scary for you,  then reflect on these two wise and inspirational quotes from great master teachers.  The first is from Horace written in 20BC. "Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which, in prosperous circumstances, would have lain dormant,"  The second is from Gandhi, "Be the change that you want to see in the world."

Sincerely,

Patricia
