August 2014

August is a month of transition. Many of us are inbetween school or traveling. It's also a time for fall planning, when we really get back to work in full swing. It's also a month to enjoy ourselves and be with family and friends outdoors and in other places. I chose this photo because it could be any beautiful coastal town and we have beautiful coasts, particularly in the north and southeast. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Prophet Share - Seasoned Professionals Sharing Trade Secrets
Prophet Share, Inc., formerly known as the RI Small Business Recovery Program, has emerged as an excellent example of what has become internationally known as "a sharing community".  In simple terms, "a sharing community" removes duplication that doesn't add value and concentrates on things that do add value. Through participation in Prophet Share, talented business owners and trainers (prophets) no longer have to individually own projection, video and recording equipment.  Nor do they have to rent expensive classroom or hotel space in order to share their talent and experience with their peers. As the result of this "penny-pinching" sharing approach, Profit Share, Inc. will be able to bring high-quality business training to the Rhode Island entrepreneurial community on a meager budget of less than $25,000 annually. In the past thirty two months, the Recovery Program provided peer-to-peer training to over 7,000 business owners and entrepreneurs.  With the collaborative efforts of experienced business leaders and teachers, Prophet Share, Inc. is expected to greatly add to that number.

To register for any of the free seminars below, please go to www.prophetshareri.com/events.  Any questions, please call Dave Nash at 401-447-8000.   All events will be held at the Centerville Seminar Center, 875 Centerville Rd, Warwick, RI - Building 2, Suite 5.

Transforming the Hurricanes of Life

This is the season of hurricanes. Before my return to my native New England and specifically Rhode Island in 2008, I lived on the beautiful coast of North Carolina, in the heart of  hurricane country. I remember when Hurricane Ophelia came and went in like a lion and out like a lamb  and In it's wake left flooding, lots of water damage to homes, roads and piers, lost trees and tree limbs, fallen acorns, and even some lost homes. Inside we lost lost power including electricity, air conditioning, hot water, and use of land line phones, computers, and television.

I remember as I lit candles, used my flashlight to read, woke up to a hot and stuffy home with very musty smells and munched on trail mix, I realized how much I take these "necessities" for granted.  I stayed one night with friends who had a generator so we had electricity could cook and watch a movie on DVD. The second night I stayed at home but woke up to no power and cold water so I took a shower at another friend's house who is an accomplished pianist and teacher. Along with breakfast I she gave me a short recital of beautiful piano music. Through all of this, I was reminded of how grateful I am to have these amenities buy more importantly, Hurricane Ophelia's inconveniences put me in touch with something far greater - my dear friends who were there with open arms, smiles, laughter, stories, food and hot water. So on Friday when my power came on and the next day when television returned, I visibly jumped up and down both times shouting "yeah", but I never forgot the special moments I had with my friends.

Then there were the cancellations. The Neptune Ball was postponed and those of us who were excited to put on our gowns and tuxedos and party, felt disappointed.  So what a small group of us did was to have a dinner party on Saturday night, dress up in our ball attire, laugh, and listen to the great songs of our friend who composes by ear special lyrics and tunes on his guitar. We talked, laughed, sang, told stories, took pictures and had such a wonderful time. We even had some of the party decorations from the ball to celebrate. That night turned out to be such a memorable event and this group was so much fun that we will do it again.

So we lost and we also gained. I am reminded that in our busy lives, we often miss these intimate moments with friends or we are just too preoccupied to plan them and fit them in.  A hundred years ago, this is how people lived without any of the "necessities" that we so rely on and feel lost without. And with the gains of all the amenities we have we sometimes lose the essence of what we are to do - love, laugh, help each other, and build community within our hearts and actions.

Sincerely,

Patricia
