June 2014

June marks a new season, one of warmth, fun in the sun, boating and water activities and time for vacations for many of us. It is the beginning of Summer and the heat will be welcomed, especially for those of us in New England. June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. Enjoy the beginning of summer no matter where you are in the world.
Remembering Dr. Maya Angelou
maya_angelou
I was very honored to have the privilege of interviewing Dr. Maya Angelou twice within the last three years. The first interview was in honor of Mothers Day and her cookbook, Great Food All Day Long. The second interview in 2013 focused on her book, Mom & Me & Mom. I must say in all my years in interviewing guests, Maya Angelou was the most notable. She was so powerful yet so compassionate and kind. I remember the impression she left on me after the interviews. I hope you have an opportunity to listen. Dr. Maya Angelou was a very powerful force, one of the most powerful in the world, and she will be missed.

Prophet Share - Seasoned Professionals Sharing Trade Secrets
Prophet Share, Inc., formerly known as the RI Small Business Recovery Program, has emerged as an excellent example of what has become internationally known as "a sharing community".  In simple terms, "a sharing community" removes duplication that doesn't add value and concentrates on things that do add value. Through participation in Prophet Share, talented business owners and trainers (prophets) no longer have to individually own projection, video and recording equipment.  Nor do they have to rent expensive classroom or hotel space in order to share their talent and experience with their peers. As the result of this "penny-pinching" sharing approach, Profit Share, Inc. will be able to bring high-quality business training to the Rhode Island entrepreneurial community on a meager budget of less than $25,000 annually. In the past thirty two months, the Recovery Program provided peer-to-peer training to over 7,000 business owners and entrepreneurs.  With the collaborative efforts of experienced business leaders and teachers, Prophet Share, Inc. is expected to greatly add to that number.

To register for any of the free seminars below, please go to www.prophetshareri.com/events.  Any questions, please call Dave Nash at 401-447-8000.   All events will be held at the Centerville Seminar Center, 875 Centerville Rd, Warwick, RI - Building 2, Suite 5.

Stress affects us all. Lester Sauvage, a world-renowned heart surgeon, researcher, and author of You Can Beat Heart Disease and The Open Heart believes, "Stress kills. Stress is our reaction to what's outside of us. It can cause the adrenal gland to produce lots of adrenaline, which causes blood vessels to constrict, makes the heart work a lot harder, elevates pressure and produces platelets in the blood which cause clotting, heart attacks and strokes."

Two keys to self-management  and stress-reduction are self-care and self-observation. It takes consistent self-monitoring. Self-monitoring, it seems, is tied to good health, and good health is tied to self-care.

Laughter is a great stress reducer. There's something about it that's extremely healing. A couple of doses of laughter help us feel both physically and emotionally lighter. Laughter enhances respiration and circulation, oxygenates the blood, suppresses the stress-related hormones in the brain, and activates the immune system. The sounds of laughter are the sounds of fun and enjoyment. It's a natural endorphin rush.

A growing body of research in clinical medicine and the social sciences confirms the life giving and life sustaining importance of positive relationships. Dean Ornish, MD,president and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California and bestselling author of many books says, "I'm coming to believe that anything that promotes isolation leads to chronic stress and in time may lead to illnesses like heart disease and cancer. Anything that promotes a sense of intimacy, community and connection can be healing."

It has been consistently demonstrated that people who cultivate strong networks live longer, are healthier, live more fulfilling lives and maintain a positive outlook on life. Here are some things we can do to reduce stress and stay balanced:

*See yourself rooted - with roots growing from our feet deep into the ground

*Move - walk, dance, play a sport, do something that rids tension from the body

*Be in nature. The beach is such a healing place

*Ask for help to reduce the load

*Share with friends

*Count all your blessings of what is working in your life

*Ask for the lesson in the stress

A step to reducing stress is to believe that you can have  peace, harmony and win-win relationships in your life. It means asking yourself  the question, 'Will the action I am about to take bring me peace of mind?' Peace of mind helps to bring us good health.

Sincerely,

Patricia
