August 2013
Greetings!

paddleboarding During August we are still in the height of the summer.  Many of us go to the beach, enjoy boating and water sports or travel. This is a great time to visit friends and family and reconnect through outdoor activities. Wikipedia says that August is American Adventures Month and National Immunization Awareness Month among many others.  For me, August is often a lot of hello's and goodbye's, departures and arrivals, certainly a time of connection.  Get ready, fall is coming. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Senior Cinema Circle

Senior Cinema Header

Are you fed up with violent, too intense, and crude films?

The Senior Cinema Circle is dedicated to producing movies for an audience that is usually neglected by Hollywood. We are the only company completely focused on producing and distributing films that seniors will love, and remind them how capable and valuable they are.

Would you like to see more films being created for the senior audience? Consider these facts:

  1. The senior age group is now, for the first time, the largest in terms of size and percent of the population in the US.
  2. By 2015, people who are age 50 and above will represent 45% of the US population.
  3. The 55+ age group controls more than three-fouths of America's wealth.
  4. Boomers and seniors have a net worth three times that of all younger generations.

With these facts in mind, it's amazing that the senior audience would be so ignored by the film community. Please help us change that by being part of the "One Million Senior Voices" campaign.  Click here to fill out the survey that will be shared with executives throughout Hollywood. Join us in changing the way movies are made.

I interviewed James Twyman, President of Senior Cinema Circle. I support James' work to bring to the public more uplifting, inspirational, real-life and romantic movies that fill your heart with joy and love.

Positively Speaking

Getting What You Really Want From Your Summer Travels patriciasitting

So many of us travel in the summer and here are some things to consider when planning your trip. Determine exactly why you are going. Is it to relax and distress? Is it to meet new people? Is it to enjoy your family? Is it to see a new place? Is it to visit friends/family? Next, what is important to you? Is it good food, fine dinning, outdoor activities, entertainment, quiet time, beautiful scenery, the arts, sports, or a combination of the above? From your list, choose your non-negotiables which are the things you must have in order to have your trip bring you what you need and want.

Even if you know there will be some inconveniences and compromises along the way, choose things to do that you enjoy and that will compensate for what you don't like. Do more of what you love when you are on vacation. If you love outdoor activities, do something everyday. If you love fine dinning, find special restaurants to suit your palate. If you love culture and the arts, seek out plays, theaters and museums.

Many tourist attractions here in Rhode Island draw visitors from around the world. Among them are WaterFire in Providence a seasonal, multi-sensory art installation that attracts 1 million people per year, the Newport Mansions, attracting nearly 800,000 visitors a year, Roger Williams Park Zoo named the "finest zoo in New England" by The Boston Globe, International Hall of Fame in Newport and Twin River Casino and Newport Grand Slots. I love the ocean and enjoyed it so much where it surrounded me on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina where I lived for 15 years. My favorite here in Rhode Island are the beaches, definitely among the most popular of all attractions with 400 miles of coastline and more than 100 salt and freshwater beaches.

There is a saying "Bloom where you are planted." Be a tourist right here. Spend a weekend visiting the local attractions and sites. Book a room in a hotel here on the beach and see what outsiders see.

Above all, do your research. Call and ask all of your questions. The answer to just on of your questions could make the difference between a positive and negative experience.

"Search for the Hidden Gems" is the title of a section in my book Pathfinding and it really applies here. I write, "Advertisers entice and reward you to buy something else to make you happy. TV commercials show you thousands of things to buy, guaranteed to bring fulfillment. Add the Internet, and you have millions of opportunities to purchase happiness and success. ...The message is the same: You will not be happy unless you buy something at the places you are told to go. How many times do you hear about a great store, therapist, book, restaurant that is not well known or advertised? It is often because the person or item hasn't been well promoted. My philosophy is to look for those people and places. They are the hidden gems and are usually not crowded or as harried as their commercial counterparts." Robert Frost the great American Poet wrote, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." So look for the "road" that suits you and don't compromise on your values. If you do that when you plan your travels, you will travel the road that makes all the difference for you.

We are in the height of the summer season. Enjoy!

Sincerely,

Patricia
