WOMEN IN BUSINESS FEATURE
This article was just published in the Jewish Voice in RI. I wanted to share this with you. The editor wrote me the enclosed questions and I answered them. The article was edited in the paper, so you are seeing the original responses.
Briefly describe what you do for a living now - and how long you've been in that field.
I am an independent radio broadcaster with programs on Cumulus Broadcasting's affiliate in Providence. I host and produce "Patricia Raskin Positive Living" on WPRO - AM630 Saturdays , 3-5PM and "Positive Business" on AM790- WPRV Fridays 3-5PM. My mission through Raskin Resources Productions, Inc. is to spread positive messages through the airwaves and help businesses deliver their message effectively. I have been doing this work for thirty years, steadily for the past fifteen and my programs have aired on PBS, FOX and NPR affiliates in NC.
What drew you to this field?
My background is in elementary education with a masters degree in counseling.
My quest has been to find positive role models making a difference in the world.
which I have done as a teacher, guidance counselor, author, motivational speaker, columnist, and talk show host. My passion is to serve as a catalyst for creating positive change. What started in the early 1980s as a pioneer to help people find solutions to problems through the media, has blossomed into a full-time entrepreneurial broadcast career and business.
What lessons have you learned in your career that you would want a niece or friend's daughter to know?
My 5 P's to success sum it up from my first book Success, Your Dream and You. They are Purpose, Planning, Passion, Persistence and Patience. I have since added Prayer. Purpose is manifested in vision, mission and strong belief. The plan comes next behind the vision with written goals and financial benchmarks. Passion is what I hear from most of my guests when I ask them what drives them. Persistence helps to reassess your strategy, your market, your timing, and the project itself. Patience is planting seeds with faith that they will grow. Prayer is vital to staying centered and maintaining hope.
What big mistakes have you made and what have you learned from those mistakes?
When I relocated to Rhode Island five years ago back to my New England roots after 15 years in North Carolina, I had the opportunity to bring my radio program to a much bigger market in Providence, but never had to monetize radio before and either had to make my passion into a business or no longer do my calling. In the beginning, I did not have a business plan and learned through trial and error and financial ups and downs. I found a good professional consultant/advisor. What I learned is that if you have a passion and mission combined with mentors, vigilance to the bottom line, and clear goals and prioritization, you can make it happen. The result is that I found a way to help businesses, authors and experts use my radio programs as a platform to gain clients and exposure.
Happiest moment at work? What was it and why?
When I was awarded Woman of the Year twice from the Carteret County Council for Women when I lived in coastal North Carolina and The Circle of Excellence Media Award from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
My happiest moments now are when listeners tell me they love my radio program and listen every week, when my clients tell me that they have gotten business from being on my radio show and when I interview renowned and inspirational guests.
If you were not doing the work you do now, what would you be doing instead?
It would be pretty close to what I am doing now. I would do creative work that allows me to find and share positive role models with the world. It could be as a writer, actor, organizational leader or fundraiser for a cause.
Secret vices/bad habits/?
I tend to let papers pile up instead of filing right away. Now I have a bin where all papers go that need to be filed. That helps but I need to file regularly. I do have assistance to help me in that area. I attend so many events that the business cards and papers can pile up quickly.
Sincerely,
Patricia
