15th Annual Orange County Arts Awards Honoree Profile:
CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH
SCULPTURE IN CIVIC CENTER PARK EXHIBITION
2014 Achievement Award for Outstanding Public Art Program
|
This is the last in a series of profiles of our 15th Annual Orange County Arts Awards honorees.
On September 13, 2014, the City of Newport Beach opened its Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park, inaugurating a major new program that advances public art in our community. prior to the opening of the City's extraordinary new Civic Center and Park on May 4, 2013, the Newport Beach Arts Commission envisioned the 14 acre site, designed by landscape architect Peter Walker, as a wonderful art venue to compliment the building design by architect Bohlin Jackson. After a planning process, they recommended that the City offer a temporary exhibition of large-scale sculptures placed throughout the park. The inaugural exhibition has been installed for a period of 2 years-until August 2016, and consists of 10 sculptures, 9 of which are on view now. A 10th sculpture will be installed in February. These ten sculptures were chosen from 260 submissions from artists located across the county. A six-member jury panel made up of local arts professionals and members of the City Arts Commission reviewed, narrowed down, and selected these works based on artistic merit, durability, practicality and site responsiveness. The City Council approved the Commission's recommendations last Spring. Once the artworks were selected, the jury panel walked throughout the park to identify the best location for each sculpture.
