2013 Helena Cultural Legacy Award for Community Visionary

Twenty years ago, at a time when Orange County's gallery scene was almost entirely devoted to traditional art, a passionate art enthusiast with no formal art education or gallery experience founded a gallery in Laguna Beach. Since 1993, the Peter Blake Gallery has become a definitive source for modern and contemporary art in Orange County. Today, the gallery's program is focused on monochrome, concrete, modernist, post, color-based, radical, minimalist and abstract painting.

To say that championing the work of contemporary artists working in these genres is a challenge is an understatement, but Peter Blake has endured the ups and downs of the market and the recent recession, attaining a growing national and international reputation for his keen eye and gut instincts.

He is a ubiquitous figure on the Southern California art scene and is revered by artists and collectors alike for his tenacious devotion to bold contemporary art. Blake was also a founder of Gallery Row, uniting and encouraging the growth of the burgeoning district of art galleries on Coast Highway on the north side of Laguna Beach-a development that also contributed to the emergence of Orange County's most successful and popular monthly art walk program.
