$2 million in New Funds Awarded to the California Arts Council
First Increase in Agency's Grants Budget in Many Years to Come from Assembly Budget Savings
|
The California Arts Council is the proud recipient of $2 million in savings from the 2013 State Assembly budget, it was announced today by the state's arts agency. The funds, directed to support arts and arts education programs in California communities, will help enhance local creative economies, fund effective arts learning programs, and support the growth of the state's creative workforce.
"This investment in the arts shows that Speaker Perez and a supportive Governor recognize the importance of the arts to our State's economy and the needs of our creative workforce," said Wylie Aitken, Chair of the California Arts Council. "This is a positive first step to gain support for measures that will increase California's arts funding and investment in future budgets."
Support will be distributed during the 2013-14 fiscal year. Funds will not be used for administrative expenses, but go to direct services for local communities in California and will be leveraged with other funds to prove that the arts is one of California's premier investments.

Arts Orange County Executive Director Rick Stein Reacts to the News

"This is because YOU spoke up! The strong advocacy efforts by the Orange County arts community and fellow artists, arts leaders and arts supporters around the state during the recent state budget process was heard! And while the improving finances of the state meant that our elected officials were no longer barricaded in crisis mode, equally important was that our well-organized and aggressive campaign was totally in synch with the messages they were receiving from the business and education communities as well--that creativity is California's most important asset economically, that it employs 1 out of 6 people in Orange County and Los Angeles alone, and that it depends upon a healthy creative ecosystem that includes artists and arts organizations as well as public schools and industry. As Wylie Aitken says, this is a terrific first step not only toward restoring the funding our state arts council once granted to our arts community, but to growing the investment in the future."
