People's Choice Poster Design Winner for 2013 Imagination Celebration is Mater Dei High School senior Elaine Huynh

Public and private school students in grades 7-12 from throughout Orange County participated again in this year's Imagination Celebration contest.  This year's theme for the month-long festival of free and affordable arts experiences for children and families is "Full SteAm Ahead."  In addition to a juried panel which selected the official poster (to be announced in our next e-newsletter), Arts Orange County posted all of the finalists on SparkOC.com and invited the public to vote for a "People's Choice" winner.  This year, that honor went to Elaine Huynh, a senior at Mater Dei High School, who created the design pictured above.

Call for Artists:  Public Art at the OC Fair & Event Center

The 32nd District Agricultural Association OC Fair & Event Center Board of Directors has elected to erect a memorial to commemorate the contributions of migrant agricultural workers to the growth and prosperity of Orange County. The project is open to California-based artists working in any media appropriate to the site and climate of coastal southern California.

Artists are encouraged to consider any area within the Centennial Farm. An additional proposed site for this project is located in the plaza and foyer area of the new entrance to the Pacific Amphitheater, an onsite performance space seating approximately 8,200. Estimated completion date for this new construction is Spring, 2014.  Arts Orange County is serving as consultant on the project.

Complete details here.  Deadline is April 8, 2013 for submissions.

WILL OC GREAT PARK ELIMINATE ITS ARTS PROGRAMS?

Taking a different approach from the previous Great Park Board, the recently elected Board will vote on Monday, March 4 on the elimination of programs like the popular summer Flights and Sounds concerts and Palm Court Arts Happenings (including the annual Imagination Celebration event for children and families) along with other major programmatic changes at the Park.  These changes include instituting fees to ride the Great Park balloon and the Great Park Carousel.  The plan is on the agenda for a special meeting of the Board at 2 pm in Irvine City Council chambers.  Arts advocates have announced plans to attend and make their voices heard in opposition to the changes.

HOW WILL THE "SEQUESTER" AFFECT THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS?

BlouinArtInfo blogger Shane Ferro reported that they have received information about the impact of the Federal budget sequester upon the NEA.  "the National Endowment for the Arts is scheduled to take a $7.3 million reduction, which is 5% of the agency's overall current budget as established by the current Continuing Resolution ($147 million). That 5% must be prorated equally between our grants budget and our administrative budget.

It's important to note that these scheduled reductions are based our current budget through March 27, when the current Continuing Resolution ends. After that, everything may change."
