Preparing for a Future Career...or How to Figure Out What You Want To Be When You Grow Up

Jennie Madden, Career Internship (AHS-CDO-IRHS)

jmadden@amphi.com

  • Take classes that support your interests (electives, Career & Technical Education, JTED)
  • Take an Internship Class! Gain weekly experience in a potential career
    • Career Internship for Seniors
    • Internship 101 & 102 for Juniors and Seniors (honors classes)
    • CTE courses often offer internship opportunities
  • Join clubs at school related to an area of interest (Art, Fashion, Environmental, World Language, Medical, Leadership, etc.)
  • Volunteer! Willingly and regularly...something that makes you feel good and do it more than once...make a commitment to learn about the organization and who they serve and how YOU can make an impact
    • Churches: projects/classrooms/nursery/production/music
    • Non-profits: attend meetings, participate (for example: walk dogs), involve other students, raise funds, etc.
    • Create your own (help out older neighbors, visit homebound students, tutor, etc.)
  • Look for an ongoing internship, aka 'job shadow', in an area you are interested in as a career
    • Use your friend & family network to start your search
    • Ask acquaintances (school, church, sports, doctor/dentist offices, etc.) for help.  Make a list and start calling to ask if the organization would be willing to have a student volunteer
    • Know your availability (weekly schedule)
    • Determine how long you want to commit: summer, one semester, year-round, etc.
  • Look for a part-time job that might provide career experience, or at least insight into the field
    • Interested in fashion design? Apply at a retailer that sells clothes; be picky.
    • Interested in owning your own restaurant? Apply at a locally-owned restaurant.
    • Interested in finances? Apply at an insurance company, or a bank or credit union once you're 18.
    • Interested in firefighting? Get lifeguard certified and work at a pool
    • Want to work for yourself? Apply at an insurance company, real estate office, or any locally-owned business.
