 News from the Nurse.....
Parents - please encourage your student to bring a water bottle to school? (at minimum the 16 ounce bottles but the larger ones 20-32 oz that ice can be added to are optimal). Dehydration and the problems it causes are seen daily here. This school covers a large area and students can get severely hurt when they lose consciousness. If you want your student to do their best be sure to help them with the basics, enough sleep every night, shut off the electronics 1 hour before bedtime (since the blue light keeps the brain active long after it is shut off)
Sufficient food/ snacks and fluids. I recommend carrying a few snacks in case the student is occupied at lunch or the lunch line is longer than he or she is willing to tolerate.
I fully realize this is basic and not exciting but for this reason it is often overlooked.
As the nurse I feel students are not able to judge properly and this condition is severely underestimated. A student needs 24-32 ounces of fluid during the school day and water fountain use will not meet this need. Athletes that practice outdoors need even more depending on body size, intensity and duration of the activity. Students that do not eat breakfast also need more fluids since the food we eat are a source of fluids. We have already seen several cases of dehydration; it starts in July with registration and goes through graduation practice.
Thank you for helping keep our students at their best so they are ready to learn.
